Searching for a good carrier to lease on to is always a hit and miss. There is always going to be some degree of discontent. In you position, being a part of those blue Amazon Prime trailer haulers, there is not too much to lose to try something else for a change.
I was at a similar crossroad; did not want to be with the carrier that, I thought, took advantage of me, yet I was skeptical about finding anything better. Landstar, Mercer, Schneider...not thanks, I stay away from kolkhoz size and mentality. I just got my own MC#.
1st year liability and cargo + physical damage package can be 12 -16K - pretty ; depending heavily on the place of residence and other factors such as loss runs from the current bobtail insurance and MVR. You need a trailer too.
Focusing only on light loads is not a good long term strategy, it will substantially limit the scope of load availability and it is a highly competitive market. Everyone wants to haul light, except maybe for Winter. Hard to say though what impact of hauling heavier loads might have on prolonging this engine life, at this mileage already. Maybe very minimal, anyway.

Overall I'd like to move on to flatbeds / step decks but then the problem arises with my limited flatbed experience. Despite the fact I have almost 5 years total trucking experience my flatbed experience is only about 2 months. Not to mention that I would need to buy all the equipment and add a headache rack because I don't have enough storage.
So right now I'm kind of stuck at either my current leased company, or try to switch to another one and potentially deal with the same ########.
The companies I just applied to: Judgin Transportation out of Chicago, pulling Amazon as well, 85% of gross, $300 / week for insurance. And US Road Logistics, 85% of gross, $260 / for cargo, hauling random Dry Van crap with random transporter trailers.
Not exactly thrilled about either of them. -
Seems to me they are having you pay your liability and cargo under the name of cargo only. Cargo is cheap cheap compared to liability.
