I think you are speaking of the "class" which determines which license you get. I have 3 trucks and they weight 17,000/17,500/17,300 pounds. Maximum legal capacity with loaded trailer without needing an oversize permit is 80,000 per load.

It is not the actual weight of the truck and trailer, it is the gross vehicle weight of the combination that is what they are looking for. -
