    I think you are speaking of the "class" which determines which license you get. I have 3 trucks and they weight 17,000/17,500/17,300 pounds. Maximum legal capacity with loaded trailer without needing an oversize permit is 80,000 per load.

    I am screaming at my computer, sorry.

    It is not the actual weight of the truck and trailer, it is the gross vehicle weight of the combination that is what they are looking for.

    Call Legal Zoom and see if that is empty weight or loaded weigh.

    It is
    gross vehicle weight.

    Why?

    Because all the legal issues with laws and regulations from taxes and permits have to do with gross vehicle weight, not actual weight.
