    1. You need a truck
    2. You need a trailer
    3. You have to have insurance
    4. You need a DOT authority or work for someone that will allow you to use their authority
    5. You need all the permits and taxes paid on them
    6. You need money, because 99% of all the brokers out there only give you a small percentage of the pay up front and you have to wait 7-90 days to get the rest if at all. There are some bad brokers out here!

Or are you talking about getting into the load brokering biz? If you're a new driver and interested in becoming a full-blown independent trucker, the best advise I can give you is put aside about $20,000 to get you through the first few months, and be prepared to discover successfully selling yourself as a new trucking outfit to brokers and shippers is tough if you're seeking "reasonable" rates.
