I am very new to this site and how to operate it. I know this question has probably been posted many many times but here goes. A good friend of mine is wanting to start a new trucking business. He has plenty of experience in the operation but I myself am wondering what would be the perfect starter truck or trucks? If there is more than one you recommend please share. I believe he has his mind made up already but I don't know on what trucks. I was just wondering to satisfy my own curiosity. He would be doing just about anything but pulling a reefer. Probably flatbeds, vans, just about anything. So what's a good all around truck? Thanks in advance.

    1) Where is he located and where does he plan on running plays an important part of getting a decent truck.

    2) Pulling just about anything gives a WIDE spectrum of what trucks would be considered a good starter truck.

Well a good used tractor from 1 of the Southern van fleets would be the SPEC to start with, no need to get a HEAVY haul , Mountain climber if you have no need for it.

You want to spec a truck for MPG that is your biggest operating cost or find a truck already spec for MPG. You also don't want a truck with the first generation EPA stuff. Trucks built after 2010 have SCR and those engines use less EGR that a better engine for MPG. Detroit Diesel has new engine built for the new EPA well really it CARB laws.

So you buy a truck spec for MPG. You need a truck that is geared to run 60-65 MPH or 55 if you are willing to go that slow. You want a direct drive transmission and something like 2.64 rear ends. You need to know the best RPMs for MPG for the engine in the truck. Then you want a direct drive transmission. Then you pick the rear ends in the drive axles for the speed you want to drive all day. If you want high MPG that would be 55-65MPH.

You also want low pro 22.5 tires with low Rolling Resistance tires or supper single tires

has the most MPG of any fleet. they sell used truck

was also had trucks for MPG and sell used truck too

You want a truck that is geared for the speed you want to run and the power at the same time. Personal and from exp I do not buy into the 2.xx rears and direct drive tranny setups. I just yanked one out of a classic that had a dir 10 with 308 rears 65mph was 1650 rpms 70 1750 75 1850. If you get your rpms to low though all older motors you will burn more fuel shifting all the time and lugging out the motor below its power range. I run nothing but classics and after working on them and regearing them I am running 7 mpg and still mostly stock on the enigine should be 8s when I upgrade the motor
