Here is the issue guys. I want to maximize my driving time. The problem is I run a flatbed which I love. If you haven't ran a flatbed before you probably wont really understand what im trying to do here but anyway... lets give a scenario.

Lets say I drive for 2 hours and get to my pickup spot. However it takes 2 hours to get loaded and then another 2-3 hours to strap and tarp. Well, naturally this eats into your driving time.

How do you flatbedders get around this.

Are you asking folks to tell you how to violate DOT regs?

No I am asking how flatbedders work around this time. And notarps I am sorry I am not on your level of super trucker status.

Something easy like coils takes less time but when you have to chain the crap out of something and then tarp somethign that has a lot of sharp corners, it takes quite a while to protect your tarp from all those edges unless you have some kind of tarping system in place. I dont have that and I do everything 100% by hand.

I am not a super trucker, but I don't lay down and take naps while I am working either.:biggrin_2554: The plan is too be organized and have a system down. Make every move count.

What kinds of loads are you picking up that require more chains than the minimum 2 plus one additional chain for every 10 feet of load? Are you hauling a lot of tall freight that requires you to crawl all over it?

The extra time and effort involved in chaining/tarping is the reason I have no desire to drive a flatbed, even if it does pay an extra couple of cents per mile. That plus I'm not exactly a young man and have no desire to spend a lot of time doing that kind of crap in very hot/cold/rainy/windy weather. The last time I drove OTR was about 25 years ago and I drove a car hauler for Passport Transport. It was bad enough doing the ramp work and chaining cars in lousy weather.
