We have a brand new truck, and want to work as o/o for Bison. They said running as a super single they can give us around 15,000 or 16;000kms a month at a $ rare of around $1.38 per mile with the fuel subsady included. What kind of MPG can we expect on average and what will our fuel bill be every month on average running these kind of miles? They give us a fuel card. Just trying to decide if we will make any money at this? thanks

This isn't the answer you are looking for BUT you will make MORE working for them as employees with benefits than you will owning and leasing your truck to them.

$1.38 per mile that does include insurance and plates?

Every truck is different when it comes to fuel consuption. You may average between 4.9mpg or 7.4mpg

9,000 miles per month if you have truck payments is not very good at all.

Your fuel cost would be $ .54 to $.89 per mile depending on your truck, weather conditions, load you are pulling, road conditions and most important right foot of driver.

Is your truck paid for and if not what are your monthly payments?

This is just an example using conservative numbers.

    Truck payments $2,000
    Fuel $5,400
    Oil/filters $ 120
    Tires $ 200
    Preventive maint $ 200
    Total $7920

    9000m x 1.38 $12,420
    -$ 7,920
Take home pay $ 4,500 per month

My drivers make $1,200 per week driving my equipment or $4,800 per month.
I would say you would be off better driving their trucks. Once the recession is over then running your own truck would be more profitable.

Depends on the terrain and areas you will be running, how much weight you will have in the wagon, whether you like to use the cruise or not, gear ratios, horsepower, and how heavy your right foot is! Is truck an auto or manual trans?

Only you will know your fuel mileage. Each truck is different. Who is we? Husband and wife? You have to do ALOT of research into the company before you make a decision. Your fuel mileage is based on several factors but mostly it's how you operate the truck that can make or break the bank. There are many other expenses as well. And how much is the truck payment is another thing you have to take into account. Take your time, do some legwork and make your decision based on what you think you can get by with regarding your truck, your operating practices, your willingness to stay out for weeks or months, etc, etc...expenses, etc, etc... chargebacks, etc, misc. fees associated with a contract , etc etc....

thanks guys. We would be running in canada only, our truck is new, payments of $4000 a month and its an auto. The I shift with the D13. I know for a fact that there are way better paying companies out there than Bison. I want to get into flat decken. Yes its my wife and I. Bison does not pay for plates either. I should find a better paying company. We are going to stay trucking in Canada only.

If you're willing to grab a 53' tridem flatbed, and everything needed for decking, you can lease on with Armada out of Wpg. Canada only, and they pay 90%. Going to the GTAish area, or Quebec, from Wpg will pay around $2300, but coming back will pay more like $4500-$5000. So, around $7000/week, running to Ontario or Quebec, and back. After fuel, plates, and truck payment, you should be able to get around $13000/month.

And no, I don't work for them. The guys that own Armada used to be the dispatchers for where I work, and they jumped off to do their own thing.

thanks man! Here is more back ground on us. My wife is a chartered accountant by trade, so we have great bussiness skills. we are very good with money, buy our grub from the store not the truck stops, don't smoke, or do drugs, or drink. We gave up our rented apartment and have ZERO bills other than our new rig! We don't pay rent or car payments and have no kids either. We should be ok in this. We want to work hard and have no family, so we can go out on the road for months at a time if needed. We don't need week ends off or any of that stuff. We will take any load any time. Just want to stay in Canada is all.

Please don't think I'm talking down about your business skills, but a $4k/month truck payment does not make one a great business person. But, that's just my opinion.

That aside, if you're willing to run US, you'll make more money. Also, if you get paid by % instead of $/mile, you'll make more by doing multiple picks and drops. If you prefer $/mile, then you're better off to go with one full load, and get to driving.

However, these are things other O/O have told me. I opted to not buy my own truck, so I'll never know first hand.

Good luck to you and your wife's future in trucking.
