I got CDL's a couple of years ago but never used them. My mom had a stroke recently now I'm her sole caregiver she basically cant be left alone. I want to buy a truck this month hire a driver, and possibly do the dispatching and brokering myself. I'd gladly appreciate any help. I have a book on freight brokering and I know a person who did this themselves and now has about twenty trucks of their own. They drove on the road for about ten years but a funny thing happened when I asked them for some advice they seemed to want me to buy a truck and put it on with their company. I think anything is possible with hard work but I don't want to be a fool. I'd appreciate any direction on this. Thanks.

Did you do a cost analysis to see if the current spot market can support your operation?
Determine what lanes you want to run , and figure how you plan to get in and out of them. Have you hired a driver? Not as easy as you may think? Good Drivers ( And I stress good) need to make $1,200 to $1,500 a week to do the job, support their families and take care of your equipment like it is their own, ( which means less repairs, damage and cargo claims for you) Have you priced insurance for your start up? The cost and wait time to get your D.O.T. numbers. Contact your state trucking organization or Nastic for more do's and dont's. Its doable, but you have to have a solid game plan and then a back uo for when that one goes to crap!Willard407 Thanks this. -
There is a reason that guy has twenty trucks after working 10 years. If you do what you want to do, you and your mother gonna end up in a poor house.

Would my chances increase if I started with two trucks? And is financing two trucks even an option with enough cash.

People don't open restaurants, because they think the know how to cook. You better give your truck to that guy. Otherwise you have to get on the road, drive yourself for a bit, read this forum everyday and then you have a chance doing it on your own

"I got CDL's a couple of years ago but never used them"
Most likely you only had one, which is expired now..
Buy a truck, make Mom go, run it for awhile, go from there..She'll dig seeing the sights -
Unfortunately my mom is not able to ride, shes lucky to be alive. Is there ANY way to do this without going on the road myself. I get the experience factor. So what about hiring a manager with experience to teach me the ropes? Does this sound doable? -

Yes, this is all do-able...But your gonna need some luck and some room to fail...
So many things can cause you to not receive the 1st load!!
Somewhere here, there is a very detailed step by step on getting a tractor runnin..He put every last little thing on there, price, and time needed for each thing..
OK, so you got a legal ready truck now, need someone to haul for!! How about your friend with the 20 trucks!! If he cant use your truck, he can point you to some work hopefully!!...A friend would be super helpfull
Leasing your truck onto a carrier would be the easiest I think..They would make sure your stuff was in order, and may even pay for some of the costs to run, certain taxes and/or insurance etc etc
Driver, well, hopefully you can have someone reffered to you or something, maybe craigslist up a driver, be picky here..Lots and lots of drivers, every shade you can think of...
If you want a good one, tell him exactly where your at on workload..Be up front totally, 1k a week and a new truck will attract a bunch of prospects
I think you can do it....Need a super amount of guidance thoughWillard407 Thanks this.
