Hi all, I've been doing battle with heating issues. A little info - 14L non egr, 600hp, engine is in my freightliner Argosy which have a #### cooling system and yes I've replaced radiator, CAC, high flow muffler, turbo blanket, fine tuned garret turbo to 38psi. Fyi there is only 10degrees variance between normal engine running temp and the point that the horton kicks in. Ok so I'm thinking that as the engines normal running temp is around 190f and thermostat is a 190f that if I install a 160f thermostat it will lower normal running temp and therefore take longer for coolant to reach the point where the Horton kicks in? What do u think? P.s issue is on a long hard pull.

I don't know enough to give you good advice on your setup but on my stock ser 60 it call for a 190 & I always ran a 180 in it. o.e.m. just runs too hot in summer to make me comfortable. have also used 170.

thanks even that info does help. I found there are 190, 180, 170 & 160f thermostats, but I am not sure if its ok to use a 160f in my situation. (Ambient temp never goes below 45f & rarely goes below 60f)

It's pretty easy to change T-stats on an S60, so it wouldn't hurt to try. I'd try 170's or 180's and see if it helps 1st. Does it make any difference if you turn the fan on early? If turning the fan on at the beginning of a hard pull helps, then you might consider a 2 speed fan hub so you have more airflow before the fan fully engages. I'm pretty sure that you can get a conversion kit to make yours a 2 speed.

I have seen a few S60's overheating on hard pulls that had the water pump impeller spinning on the shaft. They sell a water pump cover kit to change out the plastic cover for a metal one. You can pull the cover to make sure the bolt is tight that holds the impeller on. It's a big snap ring that hold it on, but do not pull it unless you have the kit, you'll never get it to seal again once it's off.

Edit: They do make a 2 speed conversion kit, not sure of the cost though.

How much weight do you gross? I would go with the 160 stat if you are working the truck to the max.

Thanks for the info, it appears that a 160f will work good for me here as temp range from about 60f to 107f and I gross heavy. I'm also going to get the 2 speed Horton as it will reduce fan engaging so often due to AC unit.

I dug a bit deeper and found that the newer freightliner Argosy actually have the 2 speed Horton as standard. Its to reduce cabin noise due to AC unit.

Thanks everyone for your input its greatly appreciated.

Just to throw out something different.

My son has a Camaro SS that has a lot of mods to the engine and would get hot easily during the summer, after we did head gaskets on it we put it back together without a t'stat in the engine and it ran even hotter than before, then trying low temp t'stats kept the coolant temps higher than usual.

It turned out that no or low temp t'stats let the coolant move through the radiator too fast and didn't have enough time in it to actually cool down.

Just something to think about with lower t'stats.
