Well this thread is probably going to make it seem like I dont know how to drive a semi, lol. But I promise I do.

Ive had my CDL for almost a year. Well a month or so ago, my company offered me a decent local position in Illinois, so I relocated, knowing that I had to retest for everything, thinking this was no big deal. Well took all my written for all endorsements, haz, dbl/tpl, tanker, everything I could, passed those no problem.

Started the Skills test, it goes in this order: Stop at line, Straight back, 45 degree back, right turn.

First time testing, everything went fine, 0 points, until I got to the 45 degree back. My tail swing went on the red line. Auto Fail. 2nd time, same thing, 0 points on the stop at line and straight back. Got tot he 45 degree and my tailswing ended up in the red again. Ive went up there and practiced everything when they close, I do the stop at line, striaght back, and right turn just fine. Its that 45 degree back I just cant seem to get. I mean, I drive in Chicago all the time, back in to docks off streets with cars parked on the sides, lots of tight spots, yet I cant get a dang 45 degree back.

The point to this is, I was wondering if there was a school that anyone knew in the North Central Illinois area (around rockford, or south of it) that would be willing to sort of teach me, without having to pay 3 grand for a whole new course. Heck, im half tempted to rent a 28 ft pup trailer for the test lol, but I dont think company insurance would allow me to pull it. I might be able to use one of our 48 ft spread flats though, but I dont want to screw up my right hand turn with those spread axles. Or just maintain an address with some family in Ohio where I moved from, and keep my license there lol, say Illinois is a 2nd home.

But the right thing to do, would be to just learn it, and get my Illinois CDL. So if anyone knows of someone, or a school that could help me out, without costing an arm and a leg, Id appreciate the info.

Go back and practice and park where you need to stop and note where your L/R mirror (or something) ~aligns with something on the ground or horizon.

Driving a year and cant do a 45? Hmmmm Do you work for swift lol. Now that my unhelpful mocking is out fo the way....

I'm assuming your tail swing is going in the red on the blind side?

I had similar problems when i started pulling vans. My trick was to pretend the spot was 5 feet in front of where it is. if you aim for a spot further forward, by the time you back it up those 5 feet, its straighter. Also come in wide, and be more aggressive on straitening it out. You will be tempted to come in tighter but that just makes the angle problem worse. Come in wide and the turn sharp to get the trailer strait before you get in the spot. As the trailer gets alined, then get back in front of it. Dont be afraid to turnt he wheel all the way when you need to. Go real SLLLOOOWWWW. It doesn't need to be fluid. Go a little, stop, adjust wheel go a little more. If you have a current CDL why not practice at a truck stop. You know how to back if you've been driving for a year. You just need practice. No need to pay for school. In real life, going int he red equated to hitting the truck next to you. generally test conditions are easier then real life. You should be able to master this and since you have a truck, just practice before the test. As for split axle, they dont have tail swing, but if you don't drive them often you will screw up the backing manuver. Its not harder, but its different. I tested in a 53 foot van but now pull a 48 foot split with a dunp valve. I can park that sucker anywhere, but when you first jump into it, its not predictable until you get used it it.

Illinois is the worst state for the skills test; they love to fail people.
They're running scared since the were caught selling CDLs.
They will even flunk you if it takes too long doing a pre-trip. I guess they have their own definition of a good pre-trip.

Is there a time limit on when you must transfer over?
If not just keep working and it'll come to you, when you feel ready then try again

I was wondering the same thing. And even if there is. I still have mail coming to me in ohio. So I'm not on a rush. I'll just keep practicing.

Look into Wolf Driving School. Their in Schaumburg, IL. We went there. It's probably the biggest CDL school that isn't at a community college in Illinois.

The skills test is done at Wolfs yard which is way easier than doing it at the DMV.

Just a guess but have you tried sliding your tandems all the way back. That should cut down on the tail swing. If I am understanding what you are referring to that is.

Yeah. I thought about that. But then it will screw up your measured right turn.

I went to a different facility and theirs is set up a little better. The box is parallel with the grass line where as the other one was all crooked. So I'm going to practice some more and re test.

Makes me feel like a dummy seeings how I can back in all these right spots in Chicago. But I can't do a 45 degree back. Lol
