Ok guys and gals, since I'm new to the industry, can you all help with the terms everyone uses.

    Example OTR........? (what in tarnation)

If you have terms, please list them below so that newbies like myself can grab a hold of it quicker.

    Thank you!

    "Tarnation", too funny;)

A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Manual will help you with some of your terminology. You can pick one up for free from your local Department Of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

    Best to you!!!

Some terms that I can think of...
CB : Citizens band radio. Standard communication device of choice for truck drivers.
Stupid: Some guy I always am near. He is usually being told to "shut up" on the CB.
Dispatcher: (May also be Fleet Manager, Driver Manager) The person who will run your life from now on.
Broker: The silent partner who keeps 90% of the load pay while you get nothing.
Reefer: Refrigerated trailer used for hauling temperature sensitive freight. May also be what dispatcher is smoking, or a good way to smuggle Mexicans.
Dry Van: Plain box type trailer. Yup, it's boring so no joke needed.
Skate board: This is a flat bead trailer. Pretty boring too.
Bobtail: Driving just the tractor portion of a tractor trailer.
Fuel Island: Lane at the truck stop where you can refuel the truck. Also, some drivers find this an ideal spot for long term parking.
Buffet: Has several different designs, but is basically the feeding trough at the truck stop restaurant. It is also unnecessary to wash your hands before using the buffet.
Rest Room: This is the smelly room in the truck stop that gets cleaned twice a year. May also be the space between your cab and trailer.

I'm sure the list will be added to....

Illegal Running: Driving beyond your allowed hours. Of course, only you as a driver and the officer are the only two people in the trucking industry who know how many hours that is. Office personnel have no idea that there is such a thing as "Hour of Service" Regulations.

Bear - the man with the funny hat who also has the gun, badge, ticket book, and an attitude the size of Dallas. Just say "yes sir" and whine about him on the CB afterwards.
She bear - female version of the above. 'Nuff said
Plain white wrapper - white unmarked patrol car. No relation at all to white guys who wish they could rap.
Pickle park - a rest area. Not sure of the origin of this, and not sure I want to know.
Chicken coop - a weigh station. Nothing to crow about.
Some non-CB ones you might want to know.
DAC - now USIS. This is a report of your driving career compiled by companies as you leave them. You know, while they are still P.O'd at you! You get the picture. They can be contested and changed if you know the right people and have the patience of Job.
Clean DOT - for whatever reason, the DOT inspector did not find anything wrong with you, your truck, or your logs that day. Many companies pay you a bonus for this.
Travel Center - these used to be called "truck stops" until they started inviting buses and 4-wheelers to join the fun. Now you can sit in the "professional driver's" section of the restaurant and listen to screaming kids or rowdy teenagers, or compete for stall space with the latest group of golden agers going around the country to casinos "winning money" and complaining about the guvmint.
