I have a question for all you veteran drivers out there. I am a student, or well, will be a student at a trucking school in June. I am getting it paid for so I will be able to choose what company I want to work with out of the gate. My school has give me a partial list of the companies that they work with to get students hired. I believe in staying a head of the game so I am trying to research now, the various companies that are out there. I am in Cincinnati, Ohio. The number one thing that I am looking for the rider policy. I want to take my wife with me after I get out of training, without having to wait 6 months. I know that I am going to hear that I have a lot to learn and that I need to show I am a good driver, or call the companies I am interested in. You are right there is a lot to learn. I know that I need to prove I can drive, and I will call the companies, but finances dictate that I might have to take my wife with me sooner than later so we can reside in the truck. So, I am asking, what companies will let you take your spouse with you right out of training? BTW I am okay with paying for rider insurance. Thanks for the help, stay safe.

I have a personal question? Does your wife have any interest in driving a truck? The reason I ask since you say you wanted to "reside" in a truck, maybe you two could team and pay bills with one person s check and put the others check in the bank for savings. It just sounds like a win-win situation for the both of you.
Catfish23 Thanks this. -
BigKev: She wants to, but she can't pass a DOT physical due to medical issues. So, that is out of the question, though I wish we could do it. I want to do OTR, but may have to find a regional gig for a year first.

Catfish I can see the rider policy is a huge issue with you.So start calling companies tomorrow and find out.Try there website and see if there is anything about a rider policy there.

Pattyj...I will call them tomorrow, and it is big with me. It is going to be what I use to determine which company to sign with. I did check the websites for every company I can think of and a lot of them just say that one is available, but doesn't go into much detail on what they are. Except Warner and Melton.

The biggest problem with riders is that, if you are a company driver, they are only allowed during certain months.
As in, not during winter months.
That is how it is with Swift, at least.
If you want her with you year round, you may have to go L/O or O/O.Catfish23 Thanks this. -
Moostek, that is what I am afraid of. I thought Swift was year around. At least that is what the recuriter told me. Doesn't suprise me they would lie. They don't pay orientation where most other companies will do that much. Thanks.

how come Swift does'nt allow riders during winter?
