I recently applied to Herc Rentals. On their requirements they list hazmat and tanker required. I don't have them but I applied anyways and said I could acquire them within 120 days. My question is what would I even need them for? To my understanding herc rentals is an industrial equipment rental agency and the equipment is hauled on flatbed which I have experience in. Why the requirement for an X endorsement?

A lot of those equipment rental companies will offer ‘fueling service’ option with the rental contract. You may be fueling equipment, hence the hazmat & tanker endorsement.

Isn’t the determining factor on an
Amount of fuel being hazmat or not , the weight or gallons of the fuel ?

I could see some large excavators etc having an onboard tank that may be over the reportable quantity .

    Ducktart Thanks this.

Saw that they rent 523 gallon towable fuel tanks..among others.

Not a haz mat driver so I can’t say for sure if that falls into the category.

Ducktart and Kyle G. Thank this.

They probably have a pump and power division. Even if you do dirt only division you'll sooner or later be asked to help P&P out. Especially when there have been storms. Pump and power has some large portable fuel tanks they send out with some things. This has been my experience with Herc , United, H&E.
Of course H&E is now Herc since the buyout. It's good to have hazmat anyway. If they are serious about hiring you they may pay for it once you hire on.

According to their site for the job in MD, the Hazmat can be acquired later, within 120 days and they will assist. The tanker is required, and depending on the location, that's going to be a road tested vehicle to get that endorsement. :dontknow:

As others have mentioned, you may be hauling totes on flatbed, and that requires Hazmat and Tanker endorsements. You could be hauling, as also mentioned, vehicles that are water tanks, and that qualifies as needing a tanker endorsement, because the vehicle handling characteristics of sloshing liquid is a lot different from static material transportation, and isn't something you just assume how to do, you have to experience it, to understand it....which is why I suspect they'll want a road test in the type of equipment you'll be driving with a tanker endorsement....and since they want you to have it already, it may be a deal breaker if you don't have it. :dontknow:
