ok folks, a little about me.

I'm 44, have a decent career, no wife and kids are grown.
I'm tired of the same thing for the last 16 years and I'm looking to get in to trucking.

That being said, I do not have to do this, it is a desire to me. I give everything my all, yet I know when it's time to move on.

I'm going to get my CDL, self pay, and want to find a company that views me as something other than a steering wheel holder. I'd also like a few creature comforts as in APU, good miles, and a decent truck.
I do not expect the world, and I realize I will need to earn my stripes, but see no reason to be miserable doing it.

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Being in Chesapeake the companies I would recommend are out, assuming your ok with flatbed. Tmc doesnt hire out that far past 95. Pgt trucking has a few guys down that way and their yard in baltimore would be where youd be running out of. Sounds like you just want to get in a truck and drive

I'm not concerned with location. I plan to do 3 months out at a time and run hard.

If you have a career, this is not the best time to make a jump for the sake of career lifestyle change.

Truckers are either not making much or are working 70+ hours a week. Their is no shortage of truck drivers.

There are 900,000 job postings per month in the trucking field. Almost 2-1 against any other field.
I have worked 70 hours a week my entire life, the hours are not the concern.
TBH, I have zero debt. Will I lose money trucking? Yes I will.
Yet I do not require a crazy amount to live. Even less if I decide to pursue this.

Jim Palmer Trucking. They have a CDL school, well-equipped trucks with APU, inverter, double bunk (more storage space) & seems to be good company. After you're licensed & trained you earn 40 CPM & plus as much of 5 CPM fuel bonus as you can. You'll sign 1 year contract for free cdl. At least talk to them before you buy your own CDL. They run West Coast to Midwest to Texas back to West Coast. Manual tranmissions, 62 mph. If you live east of Missouri you run Midwest to East.

I am considering giving up 17 years seniority driving daycab to join Jim Palmer OTR. Bills are paid, just have to decide.

Should I stay put & take up expensive hobby to
Maverick seems to provide top quality flatbed training. Look on YouTube for driver named Dale Clay.
