I am going to Trans Am this week just graduated school 2 weeks ago. Because of my old record from 15- 30 years ago TA was omly company willing to hire me with all my warts. They also hired another student with a worse MVR then mine. The biggest thing i see is JUST SAY NO to a lease. I plan to get some time in bulk up my resume and move on

They call me THE CAPTAIN because I ran fishing boats most all my life. Now I will be the captain of a 18 wheeler sailing on the sea of macadam

I also drove a automatic trans, they are worthless,no control over the truck.Auto trans. are for newbies that do not have the art of shifting and having control over a heavy vehical down. This crusty 'ol timer will stick with his manual trans.Ohh!! by the way, my truck also shifts without a clutch also, and alot smoother.

good luck to you and your new adventure

Would you please elaborate on "worthless,no control over the truck.".
 Thanks in advance.

here we go,as you can tell, i've been driving for a long time and have seen the gradual decay of the trucking industry.Auto trannys where developed because of the inability of the younger generation, not all, but seems to be a high percentage, to want to properly learn to operate a truck with a manuel trans, they are tearing up drivetrains left and right more so clutches.my last company i was driving a 10 speed day cab and when work slowed down i was put in road truck with a auto to do other jobs. The truck i drove on a snow covered roads would keep downshifting, upshifting, had to drive to fast or slow way down to keep truck from doing all this crap, thats worthless, and a driver was no control on how he or she should be driving that truck, the driver should be making that decision not a tranny. If that truck losses air because of tight manuvering, there you set building air to get the tranny to work, again worthless, driver has no control of the truck. There's more, but enough said.

Since I did work for TA and did drive their auto's, there is a manual button that when pushed, will allow you to shift the gears by using a button. That would take care of the problem you had. My biggest problem with the auto, was at shippers and receivers. You have to make sure, that you stop in neutral, when shifting between drive and reverse.

Much happier now tho, with driving a manual. Seems to give you a better "feel" of the truck.rocknroll81 Thanks this.

I knew about the manuel side, but forgot about it that day in the snow, i guess my fault. The company that i drove for told all drivers that if starting out heavy on a grade to use the manuel side so it would start out in first gear instead of 3rd when in auto. Kinda backs up everything i been sayin' about auto's. And like you said, you have a better feel with a manuel trans. Got 6 more years to go before i retire, at least full time, if i still drive part time, maybe i can drive a ranger pickup truck with NAPA with that funny baseball hat on it. Just sayin' If i get near another truck with a auto, i'm going to scream like a sugered up little school girl and run like hell.

Think I have to agree with you about the auto and running away. Had a heck of time, getting back "the rhythem" of a manual, after 3 years with TA. Would love to find a company that runs 13 speeds. Have driven one, a couple of times, and it was like driving a dream. Almost.... notice I said almost, better than sex. lol
