I just got confirmation that I will start training on Monday. I am going for my D.O.T. physical in the morning. I am getting training through a local school so I am not tied down to a company for a year.i realize I hace many obstacles to overcome before I have to worry about who I try to get on with(pass physical, pass school etc.). But putting the cart before the horse this time, I am going to try to have an idea of how to answer the recruiter the next time he ask me who I would like to apply with. A lot of the post I have read are years old when things were really bad instead of just crappy as they are now. I have been looking at company after company as to what they offer,do they take student drivers right out of school, do they hire from Texas, etc. I have narrowed it down to 5 or 6 and would like any recent input for the following companies: Raider Express,KLLM,Western Express, Heartland Express(have read their post here on the forum), or Crete. I have no interest in l/o, no worries there, but would prefer solo compared to team after training. Thanks for any input you might offer. I am still in the process of reading posts, so if I am asking for duplicate information I appologise. Be safe!
Here I go

There are many months of reading on here to give you a idea.Whoever you go with good luck and keep it between the lines!!!

Without a doubt go with Crete. If they are taking students. They are a really good company but are hard to get on with. Good luck!

Ever tried to meet a house note on 2000 miles a week, at .39 a mile ??? It's easy for a single guy....who stays out all the time.
"Years" ago, I could count on 3300 miles plus a week. Even more years ago, I could count on 4000 a week, without fail.
I'm one of the exceptions to the rule. "Run hard, play hard" My bills are minimal. But I still like to make money. And it's getting harder to do, every day.123456 Thanks this. -
In order I would suggest
1. Crete
2. Heartland
3. KLLM
4. Western Express
Stick it out for 1 year, then either go someplace slightly better for 2 more years or if it's palatable stay for 3 years then go some place good. -
Well Dance, after reading some of the posts on here, I hope i'm lucky enough to make that kind of money. I do have bills, but am lucky enough to have a wife that has a very good job and has been able to take up my slack since I was laid off in May. Heck if i can take home 500 a wk I'll be tap dancing in the cab.I'm not going in thinking to get rich, but I know there are better jobs awaiting if I can just stick it out long enough to get the experience I need. You can't believe what I'm making my house payment with now since I'm on unemployment. I do appreciate every response I get and I am taking notes all the time. I might have fallen into the l/o deal if I hadnt found the threads on here. May not be going in with eyes wide open, but they are opening wider all the time
Good luck Dance, I hope things pick up for you.

Any particular reason this thread is in the bad company section?

I can get by on less than that. But why would I want to ? I like doing other things, besides paying bills.
BTW, I actually DON'T want to run that many miles. 2000-2400 would be fine.
But driver pay is not keeping pace with every other line of work. It has LESS than doubled in the past 30 years for new drivers.
I started out as a solo driver at .17 a mile. Just 3 years ago, I could hire in at most major companies at .42 a mile. Now it's .37 or .39 depending on the company.
CRST is currently paying their "student" teams .22 a mile split. That's .11 a mile per driver.
Hell, the industry is going backwards.
BTW, the Garmin question. Buy one, it will help. Keyword here HELP. It is not all knowing all seeing. You will still need to confirm directions, use a map, etc etc. To avoid low underpasses, bad street entrances, and a whole host of nasty things that jump out in front of a truck.
Good luck with the career move. It's not all bad. But it could be better. -
I guess I posted here 1st to see if anyone had bad things to say about the companies I mentioned. I will move to another board soon. I want to chronicle my exploits
!st hurdle cleared today. Passed D.O.T, physical
