So after having my own authority for two years now, I decided it was time to head out on the road. I'm currently running 3 trucks with dump trailers locally and just bought the 4th with a 53' reefer to put over the road. I have most of my legal work done and a broker I will be working with for the loads. The driver I have hired is 50 years old with a ton of OTR experience. As a fairly new owner I have kind of taken the learn-as-I-go approach and it has faired well so far. However the reefer business is completely new to me. So guys, give me some advice, heads up, or any useful information I may need, as an owner, to keep this successful.
Here we go with a reefer...

The only thing I know about reefers is it's a bad idea to let them run out of fuel.......................lol.....

You should watch out on cargo claims. Be sure you have a definite period of time that the consignee can claim back against you. Be cautious about carrying any berries as they go bad quickly if the temp isn't perfect. Also watch your routing on Ice Cream, void high passes as this can cause the ice cream to compact.
