Agreed! Drop & hooks were nice, but I hated playing roulette with the trailer pool wondering what the last guy left me. So nice to have my own trailer...

Yeah I hated that more than anything. Drivers would drop trailers with no working lights, flat or blown tires. I don't miss that at all in fact I view drop/hook as a big negative.

Totally agree on the bs of trying to get things fixed as a company driver. Had a bad electrical system on a pete once, shop took a look, yep 1 battery of the 3 totally done. Repair? Just replace that one battery. I knew better, having been an o/o 25 years earlier. 6 weeks later, back in the shop with electrical again. This is a frustration you do not have as an o/o. Of course you are also the one paying the bill for all new batteries, but for me I will take managing cash flow, managing my own maintenance and repair, etc. etc. over and above being a company peon. But, again, each to their own. Owning and running a truck does not work for everyone.

I've always done better with my own truck than driving for somebody else.

If you work for some mega as a company driver making peanuts,20K more would seem like something special.
    35K as a company seat
55K running a pathetic mileage rate based kind of gig.
And I mean 55K after all expenses, which with a mega probably isn't even realistic.
I could be wrong, wouldn't be the 1st time.

My first year pulling tankers for a mega I made 53k including training pay. Although I agree with the trailers having lots of problems.

I've quit taking any cheap freight this year and my gross is down about 35% up side to that I have bought less fuel and wear and tear on my truck and trailer. Missed a load this week for a regular customer they lowered Over dimensional rates to what I was making for regular loads. If I'd taken it cheap I'd never get a decent rate from them again. Plus the brokers that had it posted would only use a "known" carrier I think they have had problems with booking loads and the carrier forgetting he booked it aka finding something better
