No kidding, I use to run to GA alot coming from Ohio. I would jump on 75 South. It splits like a few times in Knoxville. The first split you go right for 40 West or left for 40 East and 75 South. My gps would always tell me to go right. If I followed it blindly like a lot of drivers I would have been going in the wrong direction.
But since I was prepared and was paying attention I knew exactly which way to go.strollinruss Thanks this. -
The Garmins will reroute much faster than the RM's. Both have their weaknesses in terms of sometimes making incorrect choices when hitting a detour or other unplanned road closure.
Either one is invaluable to have when the crap hits the fan, and an unplanned detour pops up with no where to pull over and develop a plan that may or may not work. Trucker atlases are useless when it get's down to the nitty gritty in unfamiliar areas, and there is little to no detour signage.
As far as traffic, I like the faster "HD traffic" in the Garmins but it's not without faults and simply doesn't work until you get very close to signals inside/near metro areas, and is sometimes hit or miss in terms of how current the data is. I recommend real-time web-based traffic tools such as Google Maps where traffic is concerned, then meld the information found there with your GPS and go from there.
Yes. GPS devices have weaknesses and are sometimes erroneous and incorrect in their directions. But the key is to learn where they can have problems. To dismiss them altogether as a valuable tool because they can occasionally be wrong is just goofy. A device that is right 95% of the time is better than no device and no second set of eyes 100% of the timeLast edited: Aug 20, 2017

I just use rand McNally trucker gps with lifetime maps. Its only required 1 map update which I did during hometime. I supplement the rand by having my iPhone on running google maps. This will give me live traffic updates. I ignore the google routing. If you have a hotspot or use a cell as your wifi I believe RM has a live update function. But I'm already burning thru 40gig per month on my data plan just goofing off on my phone. So I don't do that.
