I am 22 years old and recently let go from my job as a Tool and Die maker due to back problems (they didn't want me to get hurt on the job and have to deal with workmans comp, possible law suit etc).

I come from a long line of drivers and wanted to drive as well but due to the advice of the vets in my family went on to tech school to get a Machinist cert. I love machining (and the money I made) but can't find another job locally and would have to possibly move to be re-employed.

This leads me to reexamine driving but I have some problems hence the questions I have.

When I was barley 18 I was arrested and convicted of a DUI. That DUI is now a little over 3 years old and I haven't gotten so much as a sealtbelt ticket since. My DL is now in good standing, fines payed and CSW completed long ago.

My question to you guys is : Do I have any chance at all to get hired on at even the most bottom of the barrel company's? If so, after I get experience under my belt can I eventually work up to the bigger companies over time?

I would ask said family drivers but there never around, go figure lol. So, I thank all who replies ahead of time.

Search the many DUI threads here for better info. But if your back is that bad I question your decision to drive truck. Enen with the better seats/suspensions in today's trucks it's still a matter of sitting in one position for hours. That's not even taking into account the stress from stuff like cranking hard dollys, pulling on 5th wheel and axle pins, etc.

Back probs are the commonest "disease" in trucking.

For your own sake think closer about this and do talk more to the family folks who are in the trade. I have a personal long-time trucker friend who is looking at a possible life in a wheelchair because he slipped on the ice with a 50lb package in his arms.

    Thanks for the relpy!

My back really isn't that bad. Tool and Die where I worked required a lot of climbing on rigs etc and I pulled a muscle. Went to the doctor and found out I have scoliosis which is very common and doesn't cause pain. The doctor put me on work restrictions for 2 weeks and the sorry company I worked for made some ridiculous efforts that ultimately worked to see me out the door.

I searched and read them all but none of them really addressed "Juvenile DUI's" which the conviction for is a lot different than regular DUI. They were all really old to so I thought with the changing law's etc things may be different now than last year.

    Thanks again

If the DUI is actually 3 years past, it does qualify you to get a CDL. The problem will be finding a carrier that will accept your background history.

The "changes in new laws" don't show any difference in the DUI section of the FMCSA's...mostly Hours of Service issues.

good luck...and before you commit to or spend big bucks on a school...do some research on different companies in your area and their requirements/limitations to new employees!

I just called a driver buddy who was in the same situation (I didn't know it) and Covenant hired him with a 4 year old DUI.

I have some phone calls to make!!

I just want to put it out (not that it matters) that I got said DUI on a dirt road in BFE after pulling out of my driveway. The police officer had been called to a possible brake in at my neighbors and had pulled me over to ask if I had seen a certain vehicle pass. He smelled beer on me and administered a Breathalyzer that was just over the limit...3 1/2 beers before being on my way down the dirt road (that nobody travels but me and my 2 neighbors) to the farm to feed the calves.Smh

Washburn good luck in finding a OTR job. The problem is your DUI is right at the border for companies to hire you. Most won't till the DUI is 5 years old, plus you were underage when you got busted. That could be the bigger problem for some companies.
