I kept 5 legalsize envelopes with me. 1 for any paperwork (bol's, receipts, logbook pages, etc...) on the current trip. the other 4 would hold my current week, and the previous 3. This makes it much easier to keep up with your months paperwork, and any discrepencies in pay can quickly be checked out and paperwork resent to the terminal.
Also, get a large notebook, begin keeping notes of every shipper/receiver you go to. these things can include information such as best routing, overnight parking on the premises or nearby, what their hours are, and if they allow early deliveries.
Always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS get out and check trailer height in comparison to the 5th wheel. The dumbest I ever felt was when I had to wait for help when I ran a kingping over the 5th wheel (first solo load). If I had taken 30 seconds to get out and make sure I would have saved myself time, money, and embarrassment.
Hey Big Dogs! Could you jump back up on the porch for a second?

Well oldnewbigonnabe..
If I remember correctly you are going with Swift..
They use a scanning process..so once your trips are scanned you get back the original bills..Swift requires you keep them for 90 days..
As far as pulling onto the side of the road..Swift frowns on this...HEAVILY..
Streets and Trips real good,,just make sure on low clearance and restricted routes.
Google sattilite maps real good.. some pictures a little outdated but still a good birdseye view..
www.safetravelusa.com good for checking road conditions..just click on the state and you will be on the DOT website..some have links to web cams so you can see real time road conditions and plan accordingly..as well as construction zones..a big plus...
This may go without saying but,,try to avoid major cites during certian times of the day...if possible..this is a learn as you go process.. -
One thing that comes to mind is that if you're going to Swift, you're going to be governed around 64 or so, my company has us governed at 65 and a lot of the companies are there about's in speed, 62-65. The point I'm getting at is if you see me, or anyone else trying to pass you, and you can tell I'm making ground on you, but very slowly, be polite and tap the brakes so we're not holding up the road for 5 to 10 miles. Now you might think this doesn't happen too often, but I can honestly say that I run in to this problem on a daily basis, especially with Swift, Werner, TMC, trucks that are governed right around me, just a little slower, I'm not saying these are newbie drivers, just drivers that don't give a ####. Simply put, be respectful and helpful at the same time............
