The best advice I can give any noob is, "Choose the right company to start with". You need mutual respect. You treat the company with respect...do your job. The company treats you with respect...no over hours BS etc. If you make the wrong decision you will greatly reduce your chance for success. See it every day!

 

remember that hammer and wood i told you to have with you? this is what V would do. using the hammer, prop up the closest fin of the 5th wheel. once it's up, keep it propped up with some of the wood. this levels out the 5th wheel, and will allow you to slide out or greatly diminsh how much you'll have to crank that handle.

 

We have a Hwy 49 here too...the stretch between Cool and Auburn has a maximum king pin of 30 feet...several hairpin turns on both sides of the climb to and from the North Fork of the American River...for some reason Werner has a truck attempt the road every couple years...very dangerous, as the drop to the river could be 500 feet.

If you saw the Vin Diesel movie "XXX", the opening when he steals the Senators Vet, and drives it off the bridge...that is the American River gorge...the bridge is the road to Forest Hill...850 foot from road surface to water...and the road at the bottom is Hwy 49!
