new to the forum and the whole trucking industry. first off im 24 years old and have been working in the automotive industry for the past 5 years. i graduated from UTI and have worked at a few dealerships the past years and am now a service advisor and i can honestly say i hate this industry.

so lately i have been thinking, instead of wasting my income tax return on something stupid i want to get my CDL and become a truck driver and start a new career.

why trucking? its been something i have been thinking about doing for about 2 years now actually. i would rather be out on the road all day than sit in one place and its also something new.

im glad i did find this website because looking at the local paper today i always see ads for truck companies looking for drivers and paying for your CDL $70k a year, home daily etc.. after reading some of reviews in the "companies to avoid" section i ahve noticed some of the companies that posted ads in the paper were mentioned on here. smith transport and carlisle to name a few.

i plan on going to my local community college to get my CDL since im pretty sure the cost is under $1k, theres also a smith & solomon trucking school close by but im not sure if they are a "cdl mill"

i reqally like this website because i found it very helpful and useful. if it werent for here i might be already on a bus going to one of those oreintations :biggrin_25525:

atleast you were able to see what i meant.

anyways how have experiences been so far and what do you recommend?

  6. Just don't get wrapped up in any company that will do your training and get you a CDL in exchange for working for them for two years. YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE LOCKED IN LIKE THAT!!!!!

If you can afford to do it, get your training yourself. As to finding that great job? Well, it's tough, but I think it's better for you NOT to be tied to a company that you'll leave as soon as you're able and start your trucking career as a job hopper.

Try to find a smaller, reputable company that will hire you and continue your training. A CDL is a license to further learn to drive a truck, nothing more. Along the way, you'll have to learn to keep yourself from getting hosed. This business is full of sharks and there's bait around every corner. There's good money, too, if you're careful and watch yourself.

hay on a side note... dont let your career move be decided on how much you can make. you will never be happy if thats the case. let it be based on how much you love your job. your still young so take your time find something that gives you butterflies on a daily basis kinda like finding the right woman to be your wife..

when i first started out i was shrowded with dreams of gold in my head at night after i finished acquiring my bs n mech eng my eyes were opened up to reality and so i started doin something i love.. "drive truck"

its not about the money really. as l;ong as i can make a decent pay im ok with that. im just tired of the same ol day in day out crap. i like a fresh change of scenery thats for sure.

plus ever since i was a little kid i always liked the big trucks. why not drive them and make some money?
