Now that I'm looking to drive a big rig, I find myself looking at every rig I see on the highway. I'm watching what these drivers are doing. For the most part, I'm ###### impressed. I've been driving 4-wheelers for over 40 years and have had my moments cussing the "driving brain-farts" of 4-wheelers and truckers alike. I'm a perfect driver so I can be judgmental! I can say, without reservation, that I'm not cussing as many truckers as I have in recent years. Are they getting better or am I getting mellower? I think it's the former, not the latter. Another thing, I find myself self-evaluating a lot more now as I drive. I hate to tell on myself but some of the stunts I pull could get me kicked to the curb if I tried them while driving a big rig. I'm not in driving school yet, but the education has started!
What about the rest of you that plan to be in the Class of 2010.....what things are you doing differently?
Hey Wannabes! Do you do this?

I have slowed down in my 4 wheeler. Really plan my drinking (never had a DUI, but now my livelyhood depends on me not getting one)..not that I drink much anyway. I try to read the name of the company on the side of the rig, & try to look at who is driving...if they are old, & have the old truck driver look (relaxed), or the new look (face pinned to windsheild, seat jacked way up, both hands on wheel with the death grip)

Oldandnew Dude, it's kinda like when you buy a new car, you suddenly notice every other same make/model like yours.

Your off to the right start. Watch all the traffic around you, you will need to be aware of their movements when you begin driving a big truck. So you might as well start being aware right now so it becomes habit. Watch the 4 wheelers actions & movements, they all act, move, & react in a similar matter. Then you can begin to judge what there next move is going to be & get yourself prepared to avoid the stupidity.
It may save you from a accident someday. I know it did for me!JustSonny and pinballwizard Thank this. -
LOL, I find myself taking turns wider in my car, turning to the lane im supposed to, watching every car around me (which ive done since i was 16, the first thing i was taught was 'treat every other driver like they are a friggin idiot' and ie been accident free since. Oh, and traffic checks, traffic checks and more traffic checks.

One thing that is good to start doing now. Look out for traffic signs for trucks. As 4 wheelers we have trained ourselves no to notice them because they didn't apply to us.
Now that we are truck drivers we realize how well we were trained to ignore them.LOL
Make a point to look for those signs, "No Trucks" "13.6" "Trucks must turn Left", when there is a different speed posted for truck and many more. Re-training yourself to spot those signs will be a value to you.
I also agree with Redd, start to really notice how people drive. That is one thing I have gotten better. Before, when I was at an intersection I only noticed the basics. Now, I notice a lot more... I notice the driver who looks anxious, he will want to get a jump on things and get out quick, I'll have to watch out for him, the teen talking on the cell phone who hasn't even noticed my truck or any of the other cars on the road.
When you are driving down the highway or road, teach yourself to watch what the drivers are doing, it helps you guess what they may do... He is checking his mirrors and looking around, probably going to cut in... that way I can make room.
I have and still do look at and watch other trucks on the road.AfterShock, pinballwizard, RACEFAN and 1 other person Thank this.
