After 20 years as a paramedic/firefighter I injured my back in 2010 and had to have back surgery, by time I was better my certifications had lapsed so I took a non clinical position at a local hospital however it went bankrupt in Dec-2015 and I had to make a decision about what to do as a career, my step-dad and uncles had been in the trucking industry in the 80's/90's and made a decent living, I did research and decided to try my luck in the trucking industry, I have not made much better then minimum wage since my injury so the chance of making 45k to 70k a year sounds great, I know I will have to work many hours and drive many miles to make that kind of income but I am excited for the chance. I am finishing my CDL program on March 1st and have already obtained my endorsements for tanker, double/triple and hazardous material. I want to do OTR and try teams to start with, right now I am thinking of starting with US Xpress, any advice and suggestions are welcomed.

Good luck!

Call Schneider or Celadon and compare them to USX.
Oh, and great start getting your own CDL and all your endorsements. You're already 1,000 times smarter than I was starting out. I'd wish you luck but it seems you have the intelligence not to need it.

Don't sell yourself short; many, many good companies to start out with.
Here's some good ones that hire new cdl grads. Some websites may have "experience required" so ignore that, the website isn't up to date. All these hire new cdl grads.
Tidewater Transit
Superior-Carriers
CTL Transportation
SVTN
Freymiller
Abilene Motor Express - lots of drop & hook loads.
You can run teams or solo with Abilene or Freymiller or SVTN, but most drivers can't wait to go solo. Teams is a hard life. -
Team driving can be rough. Lock yourself in a closet with your best friend for a month and you'll be ready to kill him. Imagine how you'll feel about someone you hardly know.
Not to mention that you have to lay down and try to sleep while trusting them to NOT go to sleep. -
What they said. I've heard good things about Abilene. Didn't know they hire fresh grads though.

We had a couple recruiters come by class this week and I have now applied at Maverick and MCT through Comcar both for OTR for refrigerator division, MCT/COMCAR is 100% no touch freight which with my prior back injury I am looking very hard at, it may pay a little less but with the decreased chance of lifting something wrong, to me it is worth it. Thanks for the advice from everyone I am sure I will have many other questions in the future.

I wouldn't go with a mega carrier if you can help it. Try and get with a company with less than 1000 trucks. Smaller companies will treat you better!

MCT or Abilene Motor Express.
