I'm not sure about Cummins, but CAT suggests if you are going to idle for extended periods to run the idle up to 1000 rpms. Have you ever seen a truck coming out of a rest area in the morning pouring white smoke? That's from idling all night at a low idle.

1000 rpm-1100 rpm. Low rpm is not good for the piston rings ect. Also it helps keep sulfuric acid from forming a byproduct from the combustion process by increasing the crankcase temps. Was your dpf clogged for that it wasn't regening properly? Or was it cleaned as it was due for an ash service, all dpf's regardless of make need to be cleaned to remove the ash that is accumulated from the regen process. They should be cleaned between 200,000-400,000 miles depending on application. Sooner if its delivery truck, extended idle, server service.

    most engines idle 750-1000 rpm.

5000????? so much for that low idle.

Fast idle always 1000-1200 rpms. Never slow idle a diesel for extended periods. It wont be at proper operating temp and it starves the cylinder walls of lubricant. Worst thing you can do is idle slow. I'm sure it cant be good for a dpf even fast idling.

The smoke is from oil pooling in your turbo. Run the RPMs up to 1000 and turn the fan on so it doesn't kick on and off all night. You don't have to leave the fan on but I do so it doesn't wake me every time it turns on and off.

I always instal a manual fan switch so I can run constant while a/c on & not have fan engage/disingage every few minutes. my reason is not the sound, but the wearing out of the fan solenoid by having it cycle off/on so much. they are expensive.

    grizzly and Fineline Thank this.
