I knew a guy back in the day that was an easy 375-400 lbs. O/O leased to Arco, the import division of NuCar Carriers. Ran out of Port Newark. He was a hell of a carhauler that could move his share of iron. Although he did look like a canned ham when he packed himself into a little import.![]()

I've always found the opposite to be true. Granted , nothing in the way on top of a low rail. I've run Delavan 2878, boydstun low rail , Cottrell cs12m3, 7512, Bankhead quickloaders. Nothing beats a Cottrell high rail for ease of getting out the door of the cars or trucks on the bottom. In fact, if you get good enough you can stop the units in just the right place to throw the door open even on a windy day.crb Thanks this.

When trucks were 96” wide there were load positions no one could get out the door.
You’d have to get creative, climbing out windows, hatchbacks, back doors, back windows on pickups, trunks if the back seats folded down. Then you’d take a skid pin (an 18” long pin with a L on the end for those of you who’ve never seen one) and roll up or push the button to close the window. Then the convoluted maneuvers really began! You’d have to reach in and turn off the ignition with a skip pin, which of course, you’d end up dropping inside.
You could also load the unit and have someone raise the deck you were on until you could open the door. The worst was when you’d load the unit as far in as possible, get out, then chain it into position.
You wouldn’t be consulting the OEM loading manual for any of those shenanigans. For me, nowadays, the worst is to climb into the back seat to get out.BigBob410, brian991219, KANSAS TRANSIT and 1 other person Thank this. -
I ONLY high rail that I had any experience with, and limited at that had an "inside" rail. Hence the fat guy comment.
crb Thanks this.
