1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

In '84, I went to United Truck master, what a waste of $$.(too young then)I'm now contemplating the idea of OTR. I signed up for a college class, aug 27. It's a 9 week class at $2300. Drawing unemployment, construction trade halted. I applied for a gov grant. I decided to get my DOT phys. I'm glad I did, my eyesight has always been 20/20 and 20/400(Not correctable). Florida allows me, with this, to drive intrastate. Using FMCSA, I can ask for a waiver, I hope that I can get a job JUST in florida. That may have to last 3 years, before filing a waiver. My driving is perfect, no DUI's, no felony's, nothing wrong. That may be a plus. I see the new CSA 2010 laws will hurt alot of drivers too. Alot of states of diff rules, interstate is one rule.

I wish you luck sir. I'm afraid with all my research I've done in getting started though, Florida especially, you will find it next to impossible to find an intrastate OTR job. Good luck though and I hope I'm wrong. Maybe a logging job or rock hauling? The goal is the magic 2 or so years of OTR experience for when you can get the waiver and spread out.

I also was told that in this college class, you'll put a 1000 miles on a truck, mostly by yourself. Half way, you get CDL qual'd. This is probably why I want this path. United Truck Master, no way you even put 30 miles on the road. That school, there was no "by yourself driving" in the real world roads.

Honestly, your school should place you in a job, or not accept your tuition, at this time.

I would suggest, that if you are going to obtain your CDL, that you check with your local Vendors/Distributors in your area. See what their age limit is, Coke, Pepsi and even a milk run...would have local runs.
The other alternative would be in the construction business as a heavy equipment operator w/ CDL. If the construction company travels out of state, then that would pose a problem as well.
    Keep us posted.
    Best of Luck!!!!

I can only hope that by the end of this year, economy will pick up. Age isn't a factor. I've seen the comcar guys all over. I found this list of florida company's. http://www.truckflix.com/dir/florida.php Being that my vision's been this way all my life, I thought of contacting FMCSA and try. But, I do believe it might be a waste of time. The waiver ask alot of Q's that previous or current employer would have to fill out. I want to keep in touch with other fl drivers here in this forum. Having a clean DMV for 17 years and no arrest records, i hope will be a huge plus, as mentioned before. I've got time now I guess to drive or call around and ask.

That is true, if an individual qualifies for the program.
