I prefer longer runs as well and most of HB's runs are what I consider short (pick up one day, run 450-600 miles, drop the next then repeat). If you look at the older spreadsheets I have linked to from my financials page you'll see an actual list of trips, miles, deadhead and all of that.
What makes the difference for me, however, is the number of preplans. If I know I've already got my next load lined up and where it is picking up and delivering to before I've even dropped off my current load I can plan my days accordingly and the loading/unloading/dropping/hooking stuff isn't as much of a concern as it would be ordinarily (for me at least).
My hometown is Eureka, California where I grew up at which point I moved to southern California and have lived there on and off for decades as well so yeah, we're kinda homies!
Good luck,
Jim

Cool!
Born in Oakland, dad worked for Mobil Oil, so transferred all over CA Lived in Sacto (met my wife there), bay area ( Concord), SoCal, all over ( OC, Glendora, Palm Springs, San Diego)!
Used to go abalone diving in Gualala as a kid just south of Ft Bragg on the coast!
Eureka eh, I neve went that far north, but hunted in Willits as a kid ,and drove the famous Weaverville Grade once in a flatbed with a load of lumber as my "shake-down" ride with a FB company. The guy that was following me said, "You did good. anyone that can do the Weaverville grade without hitting something passes the test in my book"!! He called the boss and told him I was OK! LOL
BE safe Jim! I will take a closer look at HB!

Hill Brothers took me thru orientation. I passed all there tests, including driving test. After that, while waiting for a truck assignment, I was called into an office and told they were not hiring me. I asked them Why? And they told me they did not have to tell me why. I told them they were a bunch of spineless rats, to bring me so far and turn me away with out a reason they were willing to disclose.
I went back to the orientation room, grabbed my stuff, and all the paperwork they had on me, from the trainers desk. Walked out, and got in the cab.
I am in many ways glad they didn't take me. Considering the training was more about cheating the system, and what they would not check for. In other words, "Don't break the law, but here is how you do it, so we can cover our own ******." This company must be kicking in a lot of extra income to the state offices, in order to still be in business. -
Good luck on your new job,
Jim -
Ok, well if HB is now teaching how "cheat" the system, that had to be implemented in the last 2 weeks. I went through orientation 2 weeks ago and they never showed me how to cheat the system. There is likely a good reason you did not make it through, maybe a criminal history you failed to disclose or something in you work history, who knows. They don't have to say why they chose to disqualify you, it is their equipment and property. I hope you find a job soon!

Good luck crc32 in your job search. Obviously they found something you did not disclose to them and you have a good idea what it is. Thats none of our business but Hill Bros found it. Try a smaller company as they will overlook more than the big guys. Take care.

Yeap, that's it. Have a good day.

So I am just about finished with my first tour with HB. All that i have left to do is take this load from Council Bluffs to Carthage,MO and drop it and head home. Everything seems to be going well so far, and once I Was able to get back into the freight lanes thing picked up. I basically ran from Omaha over to Illinois and back all this week. I am thinking so far so good for me, i have stayed busy and had decent miles even though the longest load was 500 miles or so, except my first load which was 720 or so. I am ready for some hometime, and will be there by 11 tonite! Everyone be safe out here and we will catch you on the flip side!

I drove for them for two years. No complaints. I ran 500-600 mile radius for them. The only reason I left them was because I got a really good offer to work for Jim Bender Transportation as a Denver relief driver. I would go back to HB if I ever decided to start trucking again.
