My first runs over Donner in the 90s were in a Cornbinder cabover with no Jake brake. I was going slower than most of the other trucks but I made it down and I thought it was pretty it was easy. They even had signs telling the truckers what to do, like "upgrade ahead, crank it up" or something like that.
Wolf Creek I was a little nervous about after hearing all of the horror stories but again, I started in a gear low enough and had no problem. I think that running a truck without a Jake for the first few years of my driving career really improved my skills and I think all drivers should be trained and actually go down a big hill without using their engine brakes.
