My first runs over Donner in the 90s were in a Cornbinder cabover with no Jake brake. I was going slower than most of the other trucks but I made it down and I thought it was pretty it was easy. They even had signs telling the truckers what to do, like "upgrade ahead, crank it up" or something like that.
Wolf Creek I was a little nervous about after hearing all of the horror stories but again, I started in a gear low enough and had no problem. I think that running a truck without a Jake for the first few years of my driving career really improved my skills and I think all drivers should be trained and actually go down a big hill without using their engine brakes.

So been to the DPS (department of public safety), got my CDL license, my trainer is heading to Ohio. So I guess I will be flying out there.

Actually, Donner along with other mountain passes got their dangerous reputations from the past when the roads were two lane. Now days not so infamous but you still get steering wheel holders not knowing what their doing.

When I did OTR training with Stevens back in '09, while on the trainer's truck, they required you to go down 2 major mountain grades without a jake break. I think that is an invaluable skill that every driver should have. It teaches control and gives a clearer understanding of how the driver, engine, and transmission work together to maintain said control. But I guess it's moot nowadays since nobody has manual transmissions anymore. Total faith in technology and total helplessness if (or is it when?) it fails, is the order of the day. Onward and upward.

You can still manually shift a auto shift transmission.... They need to be taught to put the transmission in manual mode properly downshift and keep the truck in the right gear

I think the worst one I went down was Wolf Creek, it was 2 lane with a 180 degree turn at the bottom.

Between Donner,Wolf Creek & Emigrant,I would say Emigrant is the worst of them all. But that’s just me.

I remember as a kid going over the pass with my parents on one of their monthly trips to Reno. It wasn't unusual to take 8 hours to get from Reno down to Sacramento, and this was in the summer. Get behind a few of the trucks of the time and you were in for a slow ride. The interstate there wasn't opened over Donner until somewhere around 1963-64.

...Unless you work for one those companies that for whatever stupid reason disables the manual mode.

My outfit thankfully WANTS you to use that in those situations.
