IMHO the criminal justice system is a for-profit meat grinder. As a people we seriously need to consider overhauling how we define crime and how we deal with it. The USA now has more folks incarcerated that almost any other country on the planet. With our politically driven requirements not to hire convicted felons it is rapidly forcing a growing segment of our population into either the black market economy or to live at the fringes of the "standard" economy.

It's a shame. If you've "paid your debt to society" then it should be considered as PAID. I'm also well aware that certain individuals are GOING to reoffend, but that isn't/shouldn't be the standard for every former convict.

Lots of people with "clean" records are some of the shadiest people around, often worse than many with prison records. They just haven't been caught. Companies that go into Canada cannot have convicted felons driving into Canada. Canada won't let them in to their country.

Well said! I definitely agree 100%. Fortunately for me I wasn't incarcerated got off easy with 5 years probation.

You are correct on that front. There are lots of people out there who look down their noses at others with criminal records and forget to look back in their closets to see what they have done in the past and never got called on it!

Ya, Canada in my experience has been a hit or miss. My brother in law has felonies and was allowed to travel there. I also have a buddy who has a 15 year old DUI and was refused entrance. I can get a passport no problem and I will try to get a pass to Canada in another year or so and see what happens. Its not the end of the world for me but I know is does restrict the job pool a bit.

I know a guy that used to drive otr, he had a roommate that liked to look at porn, but hide it from his kid, she found it and told school personnal that theres child porn on the computer in the house, the cops questioned the father, he deined any knowledge of it, so when my freind got home cops arrested him, he spent one year in jail, telling his attorney he wasn't even in town when the images were downloaded, but because he owned the computer, they charged him, my freind went through hell in jail, and his attorney lied to him , he told his attorney to get his gps and log books, that they would prove he is was away, but she never did anything, he got so stressed out , that on the first day of court he got convinced that he was not going to be able to prove anything ,that his best bet would be to take a court deal then get out , then he could fight the charges, today he has a felony for child porn, and take my word for it, he's not into that stuff, including legal porn, but it doesnt matter, he gave up his cdl and disappeared , just because people hear sex charge and nothing else matters, he now lives in a small town as a hermit on disability, just saying good men can get there lifes messed up pretty badly just from a lie , in his case a jerk that was afraid to admit to his kid that he liked porn, oh by the way from what I seen and heard in that court, the so called child porn pictures were of a forty eight year old internet dating sight, it really sucks when our judicial system is out to make points , instead of finding the truth. If you run across someone with a felony ,try talking to them, you might be surprised.

I have three felonies on my record. The first felony conviction is from 2006 for attempted robbery in the third degree even though I never robbed anyone. The other two felonies are from 2008 for possession of stolen property a credit card and for burglary on a garage nothing was taken though.I also have some misdemeanor convictions mostly for petty theft. With these things on my record is there a chance at becoming a truck driver and how should I go about it.I dont have my cdl yet.

Yes, there are companies that will hire you but it often depends on what type of felony crime was committed, length of time from the commiting offense with no law violations, personal attitude and LUCK

Federal WOTC (Work Opportunity Tax Credit) programs are available to essentially reimburse the employer willing to hire offenders transitioning into the community. The tax credit is only available for felony offenders released within 12 months of the hire date.
Employers are often leary of hiring people with felony theft convictions. Insurance companies may require bond insurance in some cases....
I have recently learned from a credible source that the US Navy accepts some people with felonies now--not sure which convictions would bar enlistment, but it surprised me!
