Ah yes, what I used to call maximizing my log book efficiency.

Now I have E-logs and I use that against dispatch all the time, such fun that is.

eLogs are your best friend. Keeps you compliant and allows you to turn miles. My guess is the biggest disconnect is the total lack of understanding of the HOS in the office and in the truck. Just a guess.

Thanks to everyone above for their comments...The best advice I can give anyone interested in Hirschbach Lease to Own program, is to be very careful, and make sure you understand the negatives, as they appear to be more prevalent...first of all, I didn't think unpaid orientation was legal, however, I am sure if there was a way around paying a driver for their time, this company would be the one to find it.Suppose to be 3 days, however, they drag it out even longer because they do not place any value on the driver's time. Why should they, when it isn't their dime...
They do not address the negative paychecks at orientation...the problem I have with this, is if a driver has a negative paycheck, someone is not doing their job correctly, or there is not enough work.If miles are short, how exactly does Hirschbach think this is a driver issue? The planners, and dispatchers are a few bricks shy of a full load. It is their responsibility to keep drivers moving...unfortunately, the dispatchers are rude, and aren'tt willing to accept responsibility for their own errors. I honestly don't think they are experienced enough to understand what an impact their actions have on a driver;I certainly would hate to believe their actions are deliberate.
Hirschbach promises to send directions to the drivers, however, this is inconsistent at best. They don't always have the directions, and don't even know if there is overnight truck parking for drivers at shipper/consignee locations.
The company doesn't want you calling the dispatchers/planners directly, rather you must use peoplesnet and send a message...wtf? In most cases, a driver calling in usually has a question they need an immediate response to - someone should be available to help answer questions.
Often even reminding the dispatchers a driver is out of hours soon, or taking their break, they still don't pay attention, and dispatch a load whilea driver is down for his/her 10 hour break...then, if they can't make the time scheduled, driver is blamed for the error.A dispatcher should know, or be able to access elog info on driver status, unless they are too lazy to do so.
Drivers do not get the miles promised-I am not sure I understand why you would pay an owner/operator 1.35 cpm when you have a company driver getting paid .66cpm, or less. It's easy for this company, to give out negative paychecks to cover their expenses, and not care about their driver.
I have alot of respect for all of you drivers out there - dealing with idiots on the highway, horrible pay for demanding work, idiots who do not value your time as much as they do their own, companies who try to rip you off when they should be doing everything possible to keep you moving...a miserably paid profession, I am afraid.
My husband has been driving a lot of years-a great safety record, and a great guy all around. You all deserve better treatment than what Hirschbach gives you. Friendly advise-lease to own is a carrot that is dangled in front of you.It is always just barely out of reach. When you are jacked around with deductions taken taken for loads not delivered timely (because they were not planned/dispatched correctly), or paid for relay loads they say did not deliver as promised(really?bet they are getting paid),shorted miles so checks are negative, unfriendly/non-helpful staff (recruiters must not have met any of these people), it is hard to say this a great company to work for...so I won't.
Be very careful about your decision to work here. I am a fair and honest person, and am sure that there is a company out there, that is more respectful, and fair to their drivers.
Good luck to all of you..as for Hirschbach - karma...I hope you reap what you sow.

The day Hirschbach retired and Grojean bought it, things changed and slowly started going downhill. When they closed their S.Sioux City terminal, they lost all the good dispatchers. Kind of reminded me like a winning college football team. All the good players graduate and the next year they have all rookies that don't have a clue. They should of closed East Dubuque. But I have a feeling they were trying to get away from the NE DOT.

Maybe they'll get better in time? But with Grojean at the helm and people like Tucker, it's a recipe for disaster. Grojean ran Burlington Motor Freight into the ground before he bought Hirschbach.

I'ver heard there are a lot of positive changes trying to be implemented at Hirschbach from a source that I trust.

They'll never be like the old Hirschbach again.

They have the potential. I wish the best for them.

I've seen alot worse companies. Once all the new becomes older and experienced, they will improve. After all they are in the game to succeed.

If it wasn't for my health and losing my dispatcher, I'd probably still be there.

What dispatchers they had left a year ago were less than desirable.

    You don't "try"....you DO.
Here's an idea....start with not screwing the drivers, and stop trying to make everyone pay for your trucks?
Keep a guy running....and get him home. Pretty simple!

Actually positive change takes time and it's a very frustrating and slow process. If there were sudden sweeping changes overnight it would be chaos and things would take a turn for the worse. Any change that is worth having comes slowly. If the culture doesn't change it's pointless, kind of like residing a house that's about to fall down, what's the point.
