Never worked anywhere that i was not paid when loading, unloading, road closures, breakdowns…thats why there is a hourly rate. You are responsible for the freight
My most lucrative was 10 years hauling powder,,paid hourly from departure to arrival home…4 days on average netted 112 hours pay..plus hourly tax free per diem

Are trucking companies complete push overs with their customers? I guess they can be if they don't actually pay the driver. The driver can sit and wait for hours and hours and somehow that's OK? They should drop the trailer and charge the customer rent by the hour.

Yes, because trucking is and always has been a very competitive business. Start charging a lot, or anything at all for detention and the business will be lost to a carrier that doesn't. Drivers' time just isn't worth much. Piecemeal work most everything pays by the load, ton or mile. Even regulations like drivers being exempt from over time pay. That's trucking.

In 1991, $.22/mi team pay split 50/50, so $.11/mi. But it was all miles paid to each driver. Running produce from CA to NY, NJ, and MD. Backhaul broker loads to CA.

Too many have romanticized the road. They think they're going to "see the country". In reality they're going to live life Third World style like an indentured servant.

If it was me and my wife in the truck and enough money I could do it.

Yes you probably could. I do it. My wife rides along for a bit and goes back home. That's the fun part, when she's onboard and we are somewhere like the Big Texan Steakhouse. It has it's moments.

Sure but it's still not glamorous by any means and two people jammed in a prison cell on wheels 24/7 will put your relationship to the ultimate test.

In 2000 I started at .26 per mile. By 2006 I was making .40 and thought I was making a killing

In 1988, I made $0.17/mile, $45 per trailer for lumping the trailer myself, and $25 extra each time I went through any of the 4 "main" boroughs of NYC. Within 6 months, I was raised to $0.19/mile. At 1 year, $0.21/mile. Started running Canadian dedicated, which paid $0.23, then concentrated on Quebec only for another $0.02/mile. After a few years, I was doing Automotive loads into Canada, at $0.29/mile.
