Hello all, i have a question and hoping to get some info. Family memeber was involved in hit and run by a semi. It was in the left lane where no tractor trailers are allowed. Truck driver ran away. Long story short, video and images of the truck with company stickers were captured. Today we found out that trucking company had no insurance. Attorney has case against them but my question is, how can trucking company operate without insurance? How do they do business without insurance? Who is liable to medical bills and damages?
Thank you and be safe drivers!
Hit and run question? Carrier had no insurance.

1st, I'm very sorry to hear this, it is NOT normal, as most trucking companies abide by the rules. 2nd, there are, and always have been, those that slip through the cracks, and unfortunately, one ran into you. Not much you can do, and the chances of it happening again are very slim. There is so much freight to haul, and with the lack of qualified drivers, some shippers throw caution to the wind, to get the product moved. It's part of the business nobody wants to hear about, but have no choice but to use unqualified drivers. One semi accident I witnessed last year, the guy had no CDL or insurance. Some shippers may not even know, I don't recall having to prove insurance before a load. If caught, they disappear, only to show up someplace else. Thanks for thinking enough of the site to ask, we really have the best drivers in the world, you just came across a bad apple.

What they do is obtain insurance, then "miss" payments or don't renew the policy.

In Texas, the insurance companies computers are tied to the state DMV computers so if you drop/ffail to pay your insurance the computer knows and notes it on your vehicle registration. Then after 30 days the registration becomes invalid and these license plate scanners will pick it up and you get stopped.

Very common occurrence in Toronto Ontario Canada many even have a car license . As quick as they get shut down they are right back out there doing it again. North America needs less scales and more patrolling DOT/MOT officers. Bad actors never cross a scale unless they are really bold.

Magoo1968 Thanks this.
