I've never tried it with high pressure tires such as on a semi... But I can air up a car or pickup tire to with in 2 or 3 pounds of the others on the vehicle simply by listening to the ring of the tire when thumped by a hammer. I air tire up then thump it and immediately thump one of the other tires on the vehicle and compare the sounds... Then I either add or remove air to make them sound the same. I have won $$ more than once by doing this for people that didnt believe me. I aired a tire up until I was satisfied with it and they checked it with a pressure gauge against the same tire I was comparing it to... I will say that the tire HAS to be identical to the one I'm using for comparison.

It's a quick way to find a tire that's low, there's no reason to break out the gauge every time you stop. You can use your fist if you want to give them a thump while walking around putting fuel in or after stopping to take a leak, in fact getting out to thump the tires is code for stopping to take a leak for a lot of people.

I had a 4 pound mini sledge. Got it free from a driver in OK. He was cleaning out his truck. Bought some new tools including a new mini sledge. Asked if I wanted his old one. So, I offered him money. He just said no and handed it over. I thanked him a lot. I have acquired some tools that way.

Everyone has a different personal preference. What works for you doesn’t work for everyone else. I’ve used a $5 claw hammer for twenty five years now, and caught my fair share of low tires with it.

Been using a hammer longer than I can remember.
I've noticed during a few inspections DOT cops using a rubber mallet , totally different sound.
