Most, if not everyone explained it well. No, the hammer is not a psi guage. Due to the sound after time you will be able hear a low tire compared to a tire with proper psi. If you find or think a tire is low then get your guage out. Its not really a "caveman ritual". It actually works well. You may have to do it awhile, as tires with thicker tread sound different than thin tread etc. Also bias ply opposed to radial tire different sound also. But bias ply is rare unless you pull rail or port trailers (chassis). Now! Don't get in the group called the ( sneaker shoe tire tappers) . That method is worthless. Only accomplishment using this sstt method is #1 you count the tires , 18 taps= 18 tires. #2 if you tap hard enough you may discover a flat airless tire.
Nothing from nothing but why do folks thump a steer tire or super single? Duals yeah a low tire can hide beside an inflated one. But the goober hammering his steer always makes me chuckle.
Because I have bigger fish to fry. I would rather hard on a guy about reading road signs, hos, trip planning, etc than explaining for the 20th time he doesn't need to thump a steer tire.
Unfortunately I get paid to bother. It bugs the daylights out of me, but after telling them the third time, I give it up.
Thumping the tire looks cool. I'd bet more than half the steering wheel holders out there thump the tires and dont know what they're listening for.
