I'm a driver for Hogan, and can tell you a few things about the company. On paper, yes, they are very good. But that's everyone. Here are my experiences. I'll try to just state the facts so this doesn't sound like a rant. But I am not happy with them, nor are any of the other drivers I have spoke too. I should also note that I am a new driver (9 months) and just trying to get my experience in.

    * Majority of equipment is extremely shoddy. My 1st truck, an 04 International, was literally breaking down every week. The "upgrade" unit they gave me, an 05 International had to be towed twice within 2 weeks of recieving the unit. The unit I am in now is an 06. I have had it for a month and it has been in the shop 3 times. Luckily for just minor things. It's about to go back in though because the power steering pump is about to go out.

    * I lost literally thousands of dollars due to breakdowns over the 1st 6 months driving, yet never once recieved my my $50 a day breakdown pay. This was because the truck problems would be resolved within 24 hours. I understand you have to be down for an entire day to recieve the pay, but week after week, something would be nice.

    * Claiming detention, layover and stop off pay is extremely difficult. Even if you input the macro's correctly. I'm still waiting for layover pay from Feb 07. I have spoken to my "bosses boss" about this and have basically recieved static.

    * I haven't talked to a driver who has gotten over 2,000 miles since christmas. I am currently averaging 1,200-1,800 a week... not by any fault of my own, it's just that there isn't any freight.

    * The fleet manager turnover rate is as high as the driver turnover rate. In 9 months, I am on my 3rd fleet manager. The other two were brand new and were gone within 90 days.

    * The fatigue hot line is a good idea. But it's actually an automated voice mailbox. You very rarely speak to someone.

    * Hogan does have a very good safety record though. I will give them that. OOS are below the national average.

    * A lot of customers are jumping ship because our service level is so low. Continental Tire is down from 300 loads a week to 100 and that number keeps dwindling. Trane, Whirlpool and Macy's all have Hogan on "probation" and word is, contracts won't be renewed for these customers. I've heard that that will mean a 25% drop in freight.

Above all else, Hogan is a motor leasing company. The transports and dedicated divisions are just that, divisions. The real money Hogan makes comes from the leasing business. So, if for some reason, business does falter for the transports division, it's not much of an issue.

Like I said, these are just my experiences with Hogan. I'm getting my experience and then hitting the door... Hope this was helpful.

Ya know, I've heard a lot of negative things about Hogan. I'm new to the industry with just under 7months, but I love working with them. When I was assigned to my trainer, he was awesome, had been on the road for a longtime, had lots of advice and was an all around nice guy. He reminded me of my uncle!
My husband on the other hand, didn't have such a great experience. His trainer was practically a newbie too(well, he acted like one) He sat in the back and played on his laptop while my husband drove. I would never sit in the back while a green newbie drove all the way to Wisconsin! Longer story short, my husband had an accident at the end of his first week and Hogan fired him.
When I was assigned to my fleet manager, I told him upfront I would probably annoy the crap out of him. I communicate well. He appriciates it. I say no when I can't do something and they respect that. The only time I've had any problems is with night dispatch. I don't know if they don't like me, or if its just random luck, but I only get the crap runs after my fleet manager goes home.
Any company is going to have their high and low points, but, but, but, its ALWAYS what you make of it!
This is my opinion and my experience, take it or leave it!:biggrin_25526:

I've never had a problem getting layover pay, especially when my truck was broken down, which has only been twice. I've been towed twice, once was my fault, the other was the clutch. I've even gotten a few hotel rooms outta them! As for miles, I've had to say no a few times! I am a solo driver, my husband rides with me for moral support and he helps with some little things, but wow!
I don't know who your fleet manager is, but you should ask for another one. How is your communication with your fleet manager? Are you talking or yelling at them? My fleet manager is just as new as I am. Crappy loads aren't his fault...thats load planning! But if you can't TALK to your fleet manager, they have no reason to go to the planner for you.
Its a working relationship....might as well call it a marriage....all the communication and such.
I've even gotten to Florida to enjoy once!
    My fleet manager is awesome!:biggrin_2559:

    Rainmaker:

Keep us posted on your progress. Our local newspaper (Johnstown, PA) has just recently posted a recruiting ad for Hogan. Spoke with them, all sounds good but "Heck" I take everything I hear from a recruiter with a "grain of salt."

I am in the same situation as you, had to come off the road due to a family illness. Been off the road for 16 months. I'm looking for a decent company to drive for. Now that I have some time I can do proper research but there is little info on Hogan.

Any information you could provide as to your experiences with Hogan would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! Best of Luck on your new venture!!!!!

I drove for Hogan for almost 2 years, they are not in any way with Swift. And yes if you have to drive past 11 at night you have to call in and let them know why.

I know several years ago they had signs on their truck saying "if this is unattended for 24hrs please call."
