good advice... leaning towards truck driver institute in south bend (also in indy i think). they seem very well received by trucking companies (even smaller ones that may offer better routes and pay). I'm not sure if these companies will find me less attractive if I end up not owing them 1 or 2 years due to lack of tuition reimbursment deal if I get grants and self pay. any thoughts? I could do the sponsorship deal, if this is risky, and suck it up for a year of slavery as some call it.

Thanks for the input pattyj. My head got "rolled" by #######es that cleaned house at my previous employer about a month ago. spent two weeks doing resumes and wasting effort trying to change career fields then began researching trucking (training, company reputations, occupational nightmares, etc.). Not real excited for anyone to call my previous employer but had a very sound record before that gig. Have decided to take the leap into trucking. now trying to decide which route for training and with whom I want to work for. Any advice on these two topics would be appreciated.

If you want to bring home $1150-$1400 a week after taxes and insurance do team driving. The only company I drove for was US Xpress the training is not bad but it all depends on what kind of trainer you get and I believe its 150hrs with trainer. They suck if you do solo driving they say u'll be making 34cent starting not true. If the load is under 200 miles then u'll get .34cents if it under 500 miles then its like .29 cents if it under 700 miles its like .27cents. so every time you get a load with good miles you make less per a mile. Now if you do team driving there a great company. The pay scale is .44cents with out hazmat .46cents for reefer and .48cents if you have your hazmat doesn't matter if u pulling dry van or reefer. And get your hazmat, alot ppl try to scare you and say don't get it, don't listen to those folks. I think we pulled like 2 hazmat loads in 8months. One of them was a fedex load with like 5 car batteries and I can't remember the other. We were running like 6500 to 7500 miles a week. But whatever company you go with do team driving if you're serious about making money. Alot of ppl say I can't trust other ppls driving, the thing I say to them is when hey with out risk there is no gain and driving a truck straight is easy the hardest part is backing. And if your new and you do team, you always got someone to help back up.
