Does anyone know the A/R of the Holset turbine housing on the Pittsburg Power CAT conversion turbo? Anyone using one, and if so, what do you think? Thank you.

Holset doesn't measure A/R the same way BW does. It will be a 26CM housing and it's too restrictive on a CAT. The turbo mounting flange will not match the ports properly at the exhaust manifold and this creates very high drive pressure compared to boost pressure. They are sluggish to respond and then they come on hard. I've seen a number of trucks at dyno contests that are low on power for the parts in the engine.........my thoughts are it has to be the turbo. I actually watched a truck that has been known to be over a 1050 hp at any dyno contest it's been at in the last three year only do 940's or so the last time. The turbo was the only thing different..........he had a Holset this time
You can buy larger exhaust housing for them, but this makes them very sluggish to build boost for use on the street
Buy a BW...........it will be cheaper, because it will be a direct bolt on
If you need help finding one..............PM me, I can usually find one in a week or less that would work with your stock engine.Strider Thanks this. -
IF you want to get the real story on the Holsett turbos, I would go straight to Pittsburgh Power. They Deal with them every day and know how they work and can give you the facts. I know Bruce at Pittsburgh Power would tell you straight out if it would work on your truck.
I know that Pittsburgh Power actually has a manifold custom made to fit the turbos ports.
I Know Bully Dog/ Full tilt has come out with a turbo of there own.
Guess what you could do is do some shopping around. Call Pittsburgh Power, Full Tilt, and pdi and see what they all have to offer and then make your decision. An Informed trucker is a happy trucker. -
Thanks for the replies. I have a E model Cat with a Pittsburg Power, Duralite CAC, FASS and Aero Turbine Exhaust. I have dealt with both Bruce at DI and Jared at PDI. Nothing against either of them, I'm just trying to figure out who's turbo is the best for my application. Big Boss stage 1 or Holset CAT conversion. I would guess that both shops push their turbo. Scumbags hauling freight will tell me what is really working. Thats the hope anyway.

just my 2 cents got a bw for 1400 on my c16 and run with a guy with c16 and the pp holset and he is going back to the bw both of us us pp box and 120hp injectors

The reason PP pushes the Holset is...............they make a ton of money off of it. The preference to sell this over a BorgWarner is price and availablity. A BorgWarner turbo for your application is hard to get at times and it costs a significant amount more. The nice thing about it though is it is a direct bolt on with no need to modify anything to make it work.
The part number for the Holset is 3801919 or 3801918 depending on what PP can get their hands on and your hp levels. Check the price on the turbo and see what the retail price is versus what PP wants for the kit..........I think you may understand the profit difference afterwards
Do yourself a favor..........do a before and after dyno run if you decide on the Holset. You'll be upset with the numbers. Also when you talk to Bruce........ask him how many Holset turbos lose the thrust bearing in them due to high drive pressure versus boost
Also yes, Bully Dog and PDI make a manifold for a CAT engine with the Holset turbo. Yes the flanges match...........but the truck I'm talking about at the last dyno contest. The owner spent the money for the manifold and turbo..........his manifold and turbo flange matched, but he still lost power. The flash in the ECM was the same...........the camshaft was the same..........the injectors were the same...........he had a brand new Dura-Lite aftercooler............yet he lost more than a 135 hp from the contest held by Alban CAT in Forestville MD last year........if he'd been at Alban with this combination.......he wouldn't have walked away with the grand prize..........the grand prize is $1 for every Hp you put to the ground
I talked a diesel shop from Greencastle PA into purchasing a BW turbo to test last week on a big HP truck that has a Holset............it hasn't made it on the truck yet, but I know once they bolt it on, the owner isn't going to let them take it off.
The only way I've seen a Holset come close to the BW in drive pressure versus boost pressure is to use a 35CM housing. This is so large that it will not work well on the street, but it does work decent on the pulling truck it was on for a few seasons. Then I loaned the guy my turbo..........the Holset came off last season and a BW went on, the guy won the championship this year with the BW
In my opinion the Holset is a total waste of money, but I'm nobody and haven't figured out the difference between a box end wrench and open end wrench either............both of them get the job done
it's a matter of which you can exert more leverage too without screwing something upjosh.c, power freak, puncher and 4 others Thank this. -
Love the wrench analogy Haney!

What size is the BW turbine housing that you are using? How quick to spool up? Hows the Jakes? How much smoke? Thanks for the input.
