I work for an equipment company (scissor lifts, booms, and forklifts both warehouse and telehandler) in north dakota. I used to drive a 2000 Sterling B-class streached with a rollback frame to a total 40' length to haul equipment. it was legal to 63k but we could neveer get near that due to axle weight issues (18k on the front was a no-go with the cops on a 13200 axle and rated tires). The trans has been getting weaker and weaker since long before i jumped into the truck. Well last week after i was down to starting in 4th gear (13sp trans) because that was the lowest hole besides low, the decision was made to send it to another of our shops for inhouse repair. Monday morning i will be driving to pick a 96 kenworth t800 and a 53 foot Traileze hyd. tail trailer. Its set up with a 9sp and a 330 hp M11 Cummins. After driving a 495hp cat in a truck with waaayy less weight, im expecting a turd on the pavement. Anything I should be looking for as far as weak points in this truck? Im not expecting much for power as im looking at loading pretty close to 80k daily. Anybody use this type of trailer on here? i know its kinda an oddball but i need the super low angle and thats all the company will buy. Any tips on going back to tugging a trailer? i used to pull a 48 foot spring ride triple axled straight deck at one time but thats been a few years....!

We've pulled 80,000lbs with the same engine. You should only have a difference on the hills. That is if you drive right. If you want to go fast forget it. The companies buy these engines for a reason and they are not going to set it up to go 90mph. However it can be set up for your states speed limit. If they don't it that's another issue.

Haha ive got no intentions of setting land speed records in this one. Im just curious if they have any well known weak points? Ill have to be doing all the work on it and just could use a heads up. Its going to take a little getting used to driving a 9 sp but im correct in thinking its basicly a 13 without the high side splitter? Kenworths still in the shop so i dont pick it up till wednesday now.

This is not the situation I was expecting with "holy crap I'm screwed" as the title. That was the old setup for most all of our transfer dumps, and we run all over northern CA (hills, flat, and all) with them at or near max weight. Slower? Sure, doable. Absolutely. We do it now on 385hp cummins and 10 speeds. Hills and all.

Thanks guys. Ya im more worried about driving with a 53 footer again. Its been a while and the only driving Ive been doing at work for the last year is in a straight truck. Itll be nice to have a lower center of gravity when hauling booms though! on the rollback they are a little top heavy! Im held off till monday now to get it though as im gone for my drill weekend and its not quite done. The mech told me that it has "some slop" in the 5th wheel plate and pins" How much is allowable? or is it more of a replace when any is noticeable?

5th wheel play i would think the US is the same as OZ and here none is allowed, the jaw rebuild kits are normally about $250 over here. Just stick your head under and make sure it is locked properly before driving off. M11 like to sit between 1450 RPM and 1550 RPM, I change to keep RPM above 1300RPM works good.

Thanks for the info! I was pretty sure any slopwas bad I`ll just have to see how bad it is to start with. BTW thanks for the rpm guidelines too I know all have their "sweet spots"!

for the 53' just remember that when you turn corners youll need to hang wider and watch that bubble mirror as you round the corner while watchin the traffic ahead. and of course depending on the corner it will require a all out wide turn or a shorter wide turn.
