I would have a small warehouse space and am looking at receiving maybe one or two truckloads per month of non stackable pallets. Can I get by with renting a towmotor on a daily basis and using a pallet jack inside the trailer. # of pallets would vary from 10-26. Completely inexperienced in receiving truckloads, but must make the jump to grow as a business. Warehouse space with dock is too expensive for this transition. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks

You need to make something that they can back up to and then you roll the pallets out. If its a pain in the butt, you will be the last to get deliveries. It is an expense but needed. How about if its raining? Can your items get soaked with no problem? Keep looking around, the economy is not booming, you will find something that fits your needs and your budget.

You're better off checking with a 3PL on warehousing. You're talking about 10-26 pallets, which isn't much. Storage, Crossdocking/Transload will be relatively inexpensive. Are you looking for just storage or sort & segregate and order fulfillment?

I unloaded and loaded many many trucks with a jack and forklift, and the pressure cleaner manufacturer I worked for was not small time. We shipped 15-20 pallets a day this way, and received a couple trucks a week. It sucks in weather, but you do what you have to. Good luck. Used forklifts can be had pretty cheap once you figure out exactly what you need.

My warehouse will also be my place of business. I am buying overstock/returns/liquidations that have to be stored listed for sale and shipped from the same facility and rarely will it be repeat products, so I am not sure third party can help as all items on the pallets have to be individually processed not just shipped back out. Hope that makes sense

I can tell you overstocks/returns/liquidations will be on junk pallets. This will be a problem with a pallet jack getting them to the tail of the trailer. However, you can use rope or chain if necessary with a clamp. Check your area for forklift rentals. You should be able to rent daily when needed.

They can still help. Many 3PL's have completely scalable systems, but you would be utilizing their warehouse space. Seems you have your warehouse space already, which kinda derails the idea of sourcing it out. I would check on daily fork lift rental.

I am a diligent worker and plan on unloading as fast as I can. Daily lift rentals are available here but also want to consider the driver's time. How long do I have to get the trailer unloaded generally?

With more experience driving towmotor than pallet jacks, I guess I hadn't considered that towmotor forks could access pallets that pallet jacks can't?

Your other problem, is without a dock, you're going to need a lift gate, or pallet jacks/driver assist to get pallets to the tailgate. That will cost you extra money for the carrier. Typically you're looking at 2 hours free time before detention starts. Then expect atleast $60/hr.
