Yep that's what I would guess also. Sysco added "hot shot" drivers first. There was a big scandal out in commiefornia that led to this. Basically at one time if a customer forgot to order something or is something was left off the truck, we would drop ship stuff to other customers or to a designated drop point. The sales rep in the area would come over and take it to the customer. Someone found out they as in "Sysco California " was dropping cold items off to locations that did not have refrigeration. They got it on video one day the driver dropped off chicken for a sales rep to pick up. It sat for 8 hours to be picked up. Sales rep picked it up and delivered to the customer. It was blasted on national news. Sysco immediately came out with a new policy that no sales reps could handle product and everyone had to be food safety certified. Cost the company a lot of money. Every opco had to buy a couple of refrigerated vans and hire "hot shot" drivers. U.S foods followed suit. I had to go out and do the van on occasion when we were short handed. Fun gig not as strenuous as the regular routes but I don't think it pays that great.

That video is on You Tube. All the companies have refer vans now, GFS when they bought out Market Day, took market days fleet of refer vans and small straight trucks and had them remarked and now use them as hot shots. We also still have a couple Ford 250 extended cargo refers around.

Our guy works full time and is usually very busy. He does a lot of tying up of lose ends. During the Caves Play Offs last year I had a special Friday run and was done real early and hopped in the other van and helped out.
