You won't have to pay state income taxes with a South Dakota address. -
Best of luck to you. It's a pretty good career as long as you do good by it.

You can probably keep using the same address you got your permit with. Some states insist on mailing your physical license. Some states give it to you in person. In Texas they mail the license and I was able to get them to send it to my PO Box since I can't receive mail at the address on my license (I was staying at a shelter when I got my CLP). They even mailed my car title to my PO Box. When I was a resident of Arkansas they give you the license in person at the Revenue Office and they pretty much take your word for it as far as your address. So it just seems to differ by state.
I had to get the people who worked at the shelter to notarize an affadavit in order for me to legally establish Texas residency since my license was in Arkansas (Goodwill sent me to truck driving school since I was homeless with no income at the time).
Since I drive OTR and I'm not married and don't have kids I see no point in renting an apartment or a house. I quit after a year with a mega and didn't have a job for 3 months and I either camped out or stayed in a motel (which is what I usually do on hometime unless I stay in the truck). Now I'm back driving OTR for a better company. Both companies I have driven for knew my address was a homeless shelter and neither company seemed concerned about it.Last edited: Mar 9, 2020
