flc 120 have you seen the latest overdrive custom rigs mag? It has a truck in there that wanted to get rid of his outside breathers and made quite a breather system under his hood using 6 K/N filters on it. Pretty interesting.
Homemade hi-flow air filter ideas???

I'll just keep my Fleet Air Filter for my under the hood filtered aero truck that was worth 3/10ths mpg over the stock OEM paper filter plus I can wash it and keep on using it.
Cowpie1 Thanks this. -
The best would be go to twin side cans, nevertheless, why don't you go to a cabover style setup? run some large dia. tubing under the cab and put a huge can behind the sleeper? You could even run it to the top and get some ram air going on with an old cornbinder COE tip. You could do twins that way too and it would be out of the airstream for better mpg.
Have you looked at specs of the filters? Those big old cabover cans had some pretty large surface area I'm guessing. -
i will buying the k &n filters for my idea so that i can mock up this weekend would like to have it done for this weekend, but i am reinstalling my long 1/4 fenders.
i was thinking of putting the dual air can hats like the black rubber ones that come on the cabovers and put one on top of each side breather but it looks goofy plus my doors dont open since the mirrors are on the doors lol. i think my idea may just be the trick, then i can modify the inlet holes on the factory filter hat so that it can get more air flow.
lets see what i can get done hopefully they have 2 of the same sixe filters i need in stock. -
How is it if you have twin cans that you aren't getting enough air? How much inch water pounds of restriction do you have at full boost?
-
i didnt say i want getting enough air, i just wanted a better air filter system, less restrictive and easier to clean then just popping out and in a new filter every once in a while i dont believe in pulling them out and wasting $$ on them between intervals whne i can make a reusable filter for my turck.
-
I can go a few years before I need to change my twins. Just buy a real restriction gauge for the dash. It shows in real time what's goin' on. Those little pop-up thingys aren't anything to rely on really.
Since when were Donaldson and the rest selling inadequate air filters?
I'll wash out my lawn mower filters but for the big Kitty I only trust new ones for replacement. -
Due to this thread, I just looked at the K&N for my truck. My Wix number is 46556 and the K&N number is 38-2012S, which is 164.18 with free shipping. In my area, I'm picking up that Wix part number for just over $100 bucks, which might be somebody giving me the ole dry roddin'. But regardless, about 65 bucks more for a filter that flows more and is reusable with a once a year cleaning (or more if needed), is a pretty good darn deal to me.
Without jacking this dudes thread, my truck has a single exhaust system... would turbo spool/lag times increase if I just added another stack with a Y pipe? I saw someone mention something about air flow and it made me wonder.Last edited: Sep 16, 2012

K&N has one of the worst reputations in the off road world. I used to use them on my atvs amd quit when I kept finding dirt past the airfilter. I even went over every connection in the system amd used a light.to make sure I was getting proper oil coverage of filtering media. The stocker paper setup worked.alot better at keeping fine dust out of the intake tract. I went to a foam set now and it is much better.
rollin coal Thanks this. -
Well, I'll be. The K&N version for trucks doesn't use oil and is a dual layer type filter that can just be washed out. I'm thinking of getting one personally, if I can continue to run my inner filter also then that's probably what I'll do simply because of the statement you just made.
