I don't get the fascination wit Omars ... people are nice, service is good, but the food is pretty mediocre.

I don't have a fascination but it's nice to sit down enjoy a decent meal, which I've never had a bad one at Omar's. I think how they cook the omelette on the griddle is unique not many places do that...

Sure beats Denny's subway or mcdonalds

I like to get food at the Flying J in Mt. Airy, NC (Brintles restaurant). Also ate good food at those family owned restaurants in MT and ND. I think they were attached to Flying J and Town Pump. Of course those aren't on i-80 or 40, but worth mentioning. I will eat at Denny's about once a month. Usually bring my own food. The food inside the truck stops is awful for you.

I think in some cases it depends on the time of day and what you order as to how good the food is. For truck stop food I think it holds its' own.

    I don't think there's a waitress under 60.

Had some layover in Weatherford, TX at the Petro. I have to admit, the Iron Skillet was way better than any I had previously been to. My iron skillet usual is the club sandwhich but this time the lunch buffet was actually worth getting. Salad bar was also better stocked.

After driving for 45 years and retiring I have visited many truckstops. Some good and some not so good. At least when you have a sit down restaurant available there are other choices besides fast food and the store offerings. Granted that they are not the healthiest or cheapest alternatives available but they are there.
If we as an industry continue to avoid these restaurants they will go away and every one of these stops will be like a Pilot or Loves. You will have no restaurants, no driver lounges or no free parking available anywhere. I know we can not control where we fuel sometimes but we can control where we eat.
We also need to police ourselves with how we treat the parking areas and trash. Get out and walk to the trash can instead of just opening the window. Enough said

Buy yourself a 2qt crock pot and a 400 watt inverter that plugs into the cig lighter and a plug in cooler.... total investment $150.

You can eat in the truck much healthier... and MUCH cheaper. I eat for about $40 a week. Some guys spend $30 a day.

That little crock heats water to almost boiling for oatmeal or grits in the a.m. in about 20min.

Throw in some stew beef and fresh cut veggies in a baking bag (no clean up) and it cooks in about 4hrs and SLAP YO MAMA good !! 2 full meals for about $5

    Jstear Thanks this.
