Hi guys. Hey newbie here. I have a couple questions. I drive a 386 Pete and it has no air bag dump. We haul mostly dry van. The other day i had uneven ground for my landing gear. I wasnt sure what to do. Well i didnt raise the trailer high enough and when i pulled out the pin caught the crossmember in the back of the tractor and bent it.
The shop was nice and fixed it but I dont want to repeat that. So my questions are, how high do I raise the trailer? My trainer said when i start to hear air come out its high enough. Mostly that works. And also when I pull out the tractor jumps up pretty good in the back. Another guy said wait 3-4 minutes and let the airbags settle. How do I minimize this?
My other question is when backing under a trailer how hard to you go? Bang into it or easy? I had problems with that too, I had to kinda ram into the trailer to get the wheel to lock. I always do a tug test. Do you guys tug look underneath or both? Seemed very odd so I turned it in for repair. Thanks guys.
I guess the thing that gets me is I try very hard to be careful and do a good job and it still happened .......

Slow down and take your time, get out of the truck and check things out multiple times if you need to.
The fact your truck doesn't have an air dump isn't doing you any favors, the trailer can be adjusted by cranking the landing gear in low gear, not fun but not too difficult either. Raise it up a little or lower it slightly, better safe than sorry. -

Be careful with those bent handles. If it's all the way in it will be shortened and give the illusion that everything is normal and the arm won't be all the way around the kingpin. Y'all get your minds out of the gutter, we are taking about trucking here.

I agree w/ rogueunh above. When hooking up, after 20+ yrs. I still always get under it with a flashlight, even daytime, and visually check that the fifth wheel locking jaw is around the pin. Be careful when backing under it, don't bang it in there too hard, I've seen many careless guys damage equipment, like the 'back of cab dents', don't be lazy. I back up to a trailer so the fifth wheel is near the front of the trlr plate, then get out and check that the level of 5th whl is close to height of trailer plate. If trlr is too low crank it up with the landing gear.
When I pull out from under one, I do it slowly til the tlr slides down the 5th whl, and stop to check mirrors that the trlr is not tipping hard to one side or something. If the trlr seemed to drop hard off the 5th, I get out to check and see why, check that both landing feet are pretty level on ground, usually I will crank the gear up higher a little bit so its easier to hook up later.SHO-TYME Thanks this. -
If you are on uneven ground see if you can find a piece of wood, or, a steel plate to put under the landing gear to try and level things. Then, you can lower gear as normal.
As far as tug test, yes two times, then, get out and look to make sure the king pin is seated all the way down in the fifth wheel and the locking jaws are completely around the king pin shaft and locked.
What happened is a easy mistake. The fact you are willing to ask questions and learn shows a great attitude on your part.MJ1657 Thanks this. -
OK thanks guys!

Bubba thanks I realize i know next to nothing about trucking, so to me it seems easier to ask questions than destroy stuff or get fired etc. I work for Werner but i hesitated to say that since i didnt want to start a Werner bashing thread lol.
Ok one final question. I am not very good at 45 deg backing. When can I practice a little? I am on Werner net-ops so the other driver is kinda waiting so I dont want to hold him up. I have access to the yard here in Omaha, I could practice on my day off but I worry about my reset 1-5am for two mornings etc.
How would you guys practice 45 backs? The Flying J back row at North Platte at night isnt going to work. Thanks again guys. -
The truck stop is so crowded on Fri Sat mornings. As a cherry its intimidating to be honest. I'm a little afraid of hitting stuff. Thanks again guys.
