I also can smell brakes the same as you do. Any good driver can. However Ive also had brake fires at the pad itself. Ive had glazed drums ive had whateever else you could think of.
The braking system has to be absolutely destroyed at your description for the spring brakes to be no good. Such a scenario opens a brand new thought in my mind just now, that kid must have had a horrible run across 70 all the way from steamboat possibly with upgrades giving him a break until the next runaway.
In short he was trapped going this way until there is actual traffic problems in the city below to force him to decide. Not to mention a secondary thought that hey this here 90 mph is awesome. No more of that crappy 63, sort of like a child's first drunken drink.
Does that make sense? The brakes probably would have glazed over like you say one way or the other and frosted leaving no more need to really smoke it much anymore by then.
Horrible crash in Lakewood CO, I70 closed both directions. 12 vehicles 4 semi huge fire

He didn't have the situational awareness that someone with more experience and familiarity with the area would have brought him. He should have done many things differently but didn't.PoleCrusher, T.Rucker, Criminey Jade and 2 others Thank this. -
We are going to be pulling teeth out of the media in drips and drabs for days and weeks and months all through the trials of each of the suits and charges etc.
This is a living nightmare, just getting started.
Maybe it will be finally worth it if there is a hard reformation in this industry.25(2)+2 Thanks this. -
I just think it was a lack of experience and he got scared, in his mugshot he looks almost relieved he was still alive.

I believe when all the info comes out it will be attributed to either mechanical failure, poor/ inadequate training or the one I'm leaning to, not comprehending road signs as in not being able to fully understand English. There are 2 videos that I have watched that make you think how can someone get his CDL without speaking or reading English. One driver was using GOOGLE to translate for him while speaking to LEO and a reporter, smh......, how can you make a quick, life saving decision, if you don't understand what is placed in front of you without first checking with GOOGLE?

Ive use google earth to talk to a russian, German, Japanese etc on the second laptop over next to this computer. It's not difficult to take the gibberish on the game text chat between ships and slot into google translate. In a few moments you understand what they are saying and if there is anything to do with them you type in english and copy and paste the language results back into the game chat box. And off they go. Easy peasy.
Tower of Babel in the Bible comes to mind.
Even then I best be careful with that kind of technology.T.Rucker Thanks this. -
Here is one, driver cant speak English and cant read the signs. How do they survive? I read one where a driver got a 500.00 dollar ticket in Alabama because he didn't understand English.
