It’s amusing watching these old dog super truckers come out with their “superior” opinions on what happened. Some blame lack of English being an issue. Which is absurd. Some blame Mega’s. Another absurdity. Some blame CDL mills whatever that means.
    Some blame the younger generation/millennials.

This guy has Mederos beat in the death and destruction department. He wasn’t a foreigner, wasn’t trained by a Mega and could speak English. 28 year William Gregory Schmidt.

On May 11, 1976, an ammonia truck disaster killed several Houstonians, led to major change

In the end, the driver will spend an unknown number of years in prison. The trucking company, which probably has the minimum required insurance will close and file bankruptcy, leaving minimum payouts to the families of the dead and injured. Then the company owners will have a relative apply and start a new company under a new name and MC # and continue on as if nothing happened.

ok, but for those that say its "ok for an 18 year old to get a CDL", you validated that point, that they ARE NOT MATURE enough to handle a big rig..of course too, that argument can swing to the other side, that drivers in thier 40's, 50's etc, are not mature as well...but i think that is a MUCH smaller percentage, compared to the under 30 year olds.

i think that the under 30 year old crowd, just doesn't "have it" all together any earlier.

Since I’m adding my 2 cents it surprises me that none of you mentioned the most obvious safety change to prevent more of these accidents. Mandatory driver facing cameras in every commercial vehicle driving on public roads. Owner operators included. NHTSA can set up a monitoring service.

if YOU have been driving for ANY length of time, then YOU KNOW what a CDL Mill is....

i find it "amusing" that someone finds it absurd that this young 23 year old (green card carrying trucker) , was a professional in every way, up to the point of not taking a run-a-way ramp, and chose to stay on the road, then in his own words, "closed his eyes" when the crash took place...

did he "think" that by closing his eyes, nothing would happen????

how do you prevent, a moron from avoiding a run-a-way ramp..??

do you call him on his cell phone, or QUALCOMM, AND TELL HIM TO TAKE THE NEXT RUN-A-AWAY RAMP?

Good point, but with in cab camera his previous infractions could have gotten him banned from trucking.

no, i think with ANY infractions he may have had, (you assume he had some..??) they could have made him go with a trainer for a few days or so....

if he was falling asleep, and casuing an "event" on the camera, they could have made him take a sleep disorder test.

of course now, i'll surmise, "not assume", he's allready been fired......after he has killed......
