I’d like to know trucker’s rights to live a life beyond the road. For example, I had a funeral last December and my dispatcher at Western Express made me work the day before to promise a delivery I can make at any time. I also had an MRI for my heart this past February and they continued to give me 1100 miles two days prior going through Pittsburg, Philly and New Jersey. They also didn’t care about the days where I had to stay home to help my family, while asking to switch my days off. In other words, after I worked 4 weeks I wanted a select days off for that. Any factual advice??
Horrible dispatch

How much experience do you have?
Are you at Western Express because you wanted to be there? You had no choice, they were the only company that would hire you?mjd4277, austinmike and Lonesome Thank this. -
Your rights are outlined in the company handbook. Read it so you know what your rights are. Always make your dispatch aware of when you need time off. Don't wait until the day before to communicate your need. As soon as you know...let them know. Put everything in writing so there is always a record. They will forget so remind them. If you have an emergency where you need to get home asap, they should make every effort to get you home. If you have an emergency and you need to go east and they send you west....quit on the spot, they do not care or respect you or your situation. if you have properly submitted your home time request, and they do not honor it, then request to speak to someone above the level of dispatcher and let them know you did everything you were supposed to do, so should they. This is trucking and things happen that means someone is going to get the short straw and get the smelly end of the stick! But once home time violations become a regular occurrence or they just don't care....move on, because they are not going to change.

All of the above....
mjd4277, bryan21384, OldeSkool and 2 others Thank this. -
If the latter, do you really need someone to tell you what to do if you're unhappy? Obviously you move on. I don't understand why anyone would need to be advised on this. You are an adult person, make the choice. You shouldn't need to ask a bunch of strangers.
If you want advised on other jobs in your area, then that's a different story. You can probably find help here. -
Western Express is the prison of the roads. The whole reason their tarps and equipment is black and white is to match your prison uniform.
ducnut, snowlauncher, Lonesome and 1 other person Thank this. -
You have the right to remain silent and do what you’re told. Your other right is to quit.

A while back I was on night shift running through Nashville and I saw a western Express truck stopped in the middle of the interstate. I looked and saw a guy on the ground with no shoes and he wasn't moving. then I saw a busted up motorcycle and a western Express driver looking like he was ready to go back to jail.

Ha, to think I applied to Western Express at one time, luckily they rejected me!
mjd4277 and Walk Among Us Thank this.
