Press Release, Owner-operator Independent Drivers Association

I'm working up to my decision on changing careers to drive truck (flatbed or dry van)

The Inflexibility in HOS has annoyed me and I’ve yet to drive a mile or get my CDL. This proposed change if I read it correctly would help sway me. I’m assuming this may have been discussed. I’m wondering if any of you have thoughts on it, or updates.

And FYI if you seen any of my other threads. My wife and I are now seriously considering a move to Snohomish,Wa from Santa Barbara. We have a house in Snohomish that we could take a controlling interest in if we decided. My wife’s family is in Duval and Everett, and with me being gone on the road it would help. I’d still like to stay Western 11. I’ll hit up @Chinatown at a later date to see about companies I should investigate. Also, from my other thread I took a urine test and passed clean. I used cannabis twice (and only twice- waited for it to be legal in California) in my life in January of this year. So I’m at about +3 months clean. I figured by July I should be good on a hair follicle. Thoughts?

Oh, and @Dave_in_AZ i really enjoyed your snow thread. We were on a family vacation up to Washington and Canada about that time. I could’ve sworn I smelled kitty litter by Mt Shasta. I blame you. I’d love to do that run regularly. I really want to see a Yeti.

One request. Leave your California tendencies in California. Washington already has too many left wing social justice warriors.

    Otherwise, good luck.

Thanks. I’ve run businesses for the last 25 years. I walk a fine line between surfer and business owner. Nothings going to change that.

That's strictly a Texas Bill. For the Texas State Legislature. Im not certain how far it will go through the process of reaching the House Floor in Washington DC for debate and floor vote to advance to senate etc.

If the HOS bothers you now... or rather stresses you a little bit, I don't blame you. Keep in mind the industry has had some sort of HOS since roughly the late 30's Long before you and I were alive.

The hours I ran by HOS until 2001 OTR is nothing like what they have become today. So I cannot really tell you do this or do that. Your ELD computer will tell you to stop and stay when your 11 hours is DONE. And proceed racking up a stack of violations against you for which you must answer to your company which in turn must answer to uncle sam for. Follow me?

Good luck. This is a relatively minor issue in trucking. Don't stress about this. HOS is already designed to give you way too much time to lay around waiting for the clock to say simon says get to work yer late.

No it's a federal bill in the US Congress submitted by a Texas Congressman. This has a bit of age on it. I do remember when it was submitted. Just going to have to wait and see if there is any mood in Congress to give Truckers any slack on that 14 hours. For me i'm basically against it, I rather see drivers PAID for this downtown time at shippers. Then we get into this silly debate on what it means to be off duty. Just more confusion and more grey area's in the HOS rules that need to be simplified.

    Thank you.

I visited the website called "The Hill" which maintains a rolling near real time of Congressional Activity day to day.

I have plainly my own ideas of how HOS should work. But some will not be popular or ever see light of day. I would be delusional to even dare think that a nobody like myself would think that something good will come from these ideas. 10 million truckers. All sorts of people. Some roll a week on 4 hours nap others are like teenagers requiring 16 hours of snoring to work half a day.. and in between.

This is already done via detention. The last thing this industry needs it yet another law from the Feds. If a driver isn't getting paid detention that's his fault.

It doesnt so much stress me, It just annoys me. Keeping inefficiencies (it’s the gubment way) when some flexibility seems more pro-business plays out better. I’d like to see it for that reason. Drivers always pushing up against HOS to me show a problem. Whether that legislation would make it better I don’t know. But from what I’ve read it’s seem drivers getting hamstrung with business being 9-5 and assorted delays really keeps some people from maximizing their profitability.

You're getting ready to dive head first into one the most Federally regulated industries in the whole nation. The inefficiency, change and regulations are going to drive you crazy. You may not do well as a driver but after you learn the ropes a little I have a feeling you'll enjoy being an OO.

It's not so much as pushing against it but working around it's limitations.

I forget exactly how many hours you can work daily on recap 8 days and never run out of hours. But you are not going very far today. SO we need 3 more truckers and trucks to replace the lost mileage to greater enforcement.

I suppose we brought (Who is this we? Not me! etc) this on our collective selves when running two or three comic paper logs the way some of us did.
