HOS VS Brains

Do you need the HOS to make you a safe driver?

  1. Yes - I need the government's regulations to tell me when I'm unsafe to drive.

The gooberment thinks they know what's best and safe for everyone. So much so that now they will even have the TSA in the scales.

The government thinks they know everyone's work & sleep habits. They think they know how long it takes for a person to drive & work, before they become a danger to the road.

Me, on the other hand, think that I know my body, work & sleep habits better than the government. I know when I'm awake, I know when I'm sleepy. I know how far I can stretch myself. Since I've been driving, I've always had one rule that I've never broken to myself. That's to sleep when I'm sleepy and drive when I'm awake..

Speaking JUST FOR YOURSELF (and not others) do you think the governments HOS regs are necessary for you to stay safe? Or do you think that if the HOS were abolished, that youd drive until you were unsafe?

The problem is that there will always be a small pool of idjits that have no clue about when its time to hang it up. Eventually they kill someone - and usually it's themselves and a carload of kids.

I say "Abolish the HOS rules". Along with all the stupid subsidies this industry gets from Uncle Slam that contorts our career field into an illogical nightmare.

Let the trial lawyers be the system's checks and balances- when a company screws up- or when a driver screws up, send it to Civil Court and let the circumstances be tested in a public forum. That's how it's supposed to work in a "Free Country".

I think since most companies have Electronic Logs. They should allow you to drive or even better those who have been driving without accidents and tickets to be able to make the better choices, and the punishment would have to be the HOS rules.

That way experienced good drivers could get paid for what they are worth, and you wouldn't have to have 3 trucks on the road to do what 1 man could do. We would also make good choices because knowing we can make more money by being safe we won't push it as much.

But until Hell freezes over. I guess we have to do what it do.

I probably didn't fill out two months worth of logs total in my first three years of driving.

I drove until I wanted to sleep, and slept until I wanted to drive. The only reason I did fill out a few logs is one company I went to work for finally said if I didn't start logging, they would hold my checks until I turned them in. I would log a few weeks, then stop until they threatened again.

None of these propsed changes are going to make the roads safer or prevent anybody from driving tired. What a joke. They're trying to create jobs, by raising the need for drivers.

Now if they could get 4-wheelers to stop cutting us off and stopping at the end of freeway entrance ramps when they're supposed to merge.

Or how about not allowing 200 mile loads that pickup at 0900 and deliver at 0030.

The real biggest problem causing fatigue is nothing to do with time spent driving. If anything it's appointment times and time spent waiting to be loaded or having to get up in the middle of the night to back into a dock.

The HOS were made do to Private Companies making drivers drive tired(Do a lil research),,,,YEah truth be told, way back then when companys made drivers do terrible things on terrible roads and terrible work conditions(like NO SLEEPERS),,Handloading and unloading all loads, sleeping in drivers seat,,,

I like how this thread is going,,So if your going to expond on "How It Should Be,at least be factual and accurate

There are day i could drive 16 hours and days im done after 8 hours. I know when to park it. What if those elected and appointed officals had to do a log. Im sure they work over 14 on some days..... then drive home.

Personally, answering the question of the OP, I could run without the HOS rules and be perfectly safe....However I probably wouldn't want to be on the road if we didn't have some form of HOS regulations.
